Take away one lace-weave wig, add one katana mix thoroughly

The mods at noscans_daily have posted a clarification and update to the rules of the community vis a vis calling people out on their privilege. Summation? "This is not a safe space." No, they actually say that in the post itself - they will not make NS_D a safe space for those discussions to occur. Otherwise, it's a spectacular case of epic tl;dring that ( Read more... )

I don't know. I kinda understand why they made the decision they made. I'm keeping in mind that I don't know the history of noscans or the members so I'm trying to be objective and fair here ( ... )

After some thought, I actually agree with most of your points. Comics fandom as a whole is anything but safe; I don't know of any space in comics fandom that's perfectly safe from all the isms mentioned above. The sad thing? Is that the scans_daily community and its successors were the safest space that I'd ever found. So my upset is more due to the fact that the mods, while well intentioned, have ricocheted from branding it as a safe space to doing the opposite. It's also sad that virtually no one calling the mods out last week responded to the mod posts yesterday. Why? Because they've either left the comms or have given up.

So, yes. It's a good attempt by the mods. I just wish that they'd done this a year ago.

I have an outfit from Retroscope and I'll buy more things from them. The quality is beautiful, straight seams, etc, nice fabrics, and my order arrived two days after I placed it. :) HIGHLY recommended!

Edited to add that Gothic Miss Manners (cupcake_goth) is a big Retroscope customer. I trust her judgment on web vendors.

Edited AGAIN to add that my Retroscope outfit is also really comfortable. And pinstriped. And bustled. And that people stop and stare when I wear it. Buy that jacket. :) I'll stop now.

Thank you for the edits. ♥ ♥

I may spring for the jacket. It's not really cut for a woman, but I could always get it taken in. (I still lament the loss of the excellent tailor at French Cleaners.)

And why aren't you and Dr. Bale doing a podcast? Ideally, during your sessions?

...I'm very tempted to propose that to him. He'd probably LIKE the suggestion as long as no names were mentioned. When I told him, however, with a perfectly straight face that I thought that photos of his Princess Leia session should be sent to 4chan IMMEDIATELY for the purposes of coalescing an internet meme, he rejected the idea. I was shocked! SHOCKED, I tell you! I'll be sure to ask him what he thinks of /b/ the next time I see him.

In all honesty, I'm more and more surprised by what comes out of his mouth each week. It's almost like he's screwing with me on purpose. But I don't want to slide into paranoia. You know, like the existential terror that I willingly inflict on all my German coworkers simply by smiling and cheerfully calling "GOOD MORNING!" to them everyday? It confuses them. I just know that they're retreating to their offices and succumbing to a paralyzing vortex of paranoia. "WHY is she saying good morning to me? What is she going to do next?!"

I'm actually one of the folk that suggested to the mods that they clarify that NSD isn't a safe space, unless they were seriously prepared to go all the way. (Closed membership, banning people who are clinging to their bingo cards and aren't interested in learning, etc.) But I see neo_prodigy beat me to most of my points. I see commenters turning the conversation back to the oft-neglected needs and feelings of white people, and I know I would have to suggest to most of them that they go found their own community where they can ignore poc all day if they want to. The NSD mods clearly aren't prepared to tell anyone that.

And I think they were a little foggy on the definition of safe space, previously, so at least that's clear.

If you feel like there's a big market for a comics fandom safe space, though...I don't know, I hang out on my lj/dw mostly...maybe one needs to be opened up.

I had a dream last night that I was being chased by a hungry T-Rex around a grassy field.

Blame it on all those Land of the Lost trailers!

Your acupuncture visits are *much different* than mine. :)
