Take away one lace-weave wig, add one katana mix thoroughly

The mods at noscans_daily have posted a clarification and update to the rules of the community vis a vis calling people out on their privilege. Summation? "This is not a safe space." No, they actually say that in the post itself - they will not make NS_D a safe space for those discussions to occur. Otherwise, it's a spectacular case of epic tl;dring that ( Read more... )

I think what rabican skalja is saying is that Scans Daily can't ensure that discriminatory comments won't be made, which is what a safe space can. The mods are actively encouraging calling people on prejudiced bs, in order to make it a safer space, but they can't promise they won't be made. Personal attacks are against the rule, and I'd imagine something that targeted you personally such as a racist comment would count.

That's pretty much what I took away from it.

Well, there's also the subtext of 'safe spaces' which are essentially capable of completely denying access to people who threaten the highlighted minorities or interest groups. For better or for worse, SD2.0 and noscans_daily seem to have decided they like being the "general" comm for comics discussion, rather than the minority-safe one.

I can't say that I'd rather they go one way or the other. but I agree that you can't be a general comics forum and also provide a safe space for any minority or identity group, because privilige and bigotry do in fact exist, and comics fandom, small as it is, still has a mainstream, and you can't have it without accepting this. Providing a safe space within any fandom would mean banning a fair number of people, and SD 2.0 is apparently meant to embrace wider fandoms, rather than be a girl-run slash community(which might have a chance at running a safe space).

There's still the problem of how they're going to tell us to shape and regulate such discussions. The "personal attacks" things are still a cop out of fail - hopefully all such discussions would be civil and polite, but it still leaves a big gray area for the mods to power trip and decide that one person calling out someone on racism gets a warning while another doesn't. That's my main worry.
