Some clarification regarding my part in recent events at scans_daily.

Mar 01, 2009 16:39

I've waffled over the last day over whether or not I should post this. I decided to put it up to clarify a couple of things that are being said the sequence of events that led to the nuking of scans_daily. I'm writing this on very little sleep, so bear with me if things aren't crystal clear and if it's terse. My purpose here isn't to exhaustively go over ( Read more... )

Good on you for making this post.

I think the guy needs to fucking man up. Oh noez a girl fake threatened me on the internets! Ugh. Whatever.

General consensus seems to be that it's surprising SD lasted as long as it did, given the copyrights issues. Nonetheless, Mr. David is the one acting like the school yard bully he is so fond of mentioning, with his dance of getting it taken down.

This is probably one of the best arguments I have ever seen for fourth fucking wall. Fandom is for us. Not them. Period.

I think there's a place for creator and fan dialog in fan-run spaces. In fact, occasionally it's really fun to talk to creators and geek out with them over shared love for characters, mediums, and genres. But, yeah, there is a leitmotif of creators occasionally stumbling across fannish spaces, not understanding the culture and styles of group discourse of same, and things going downhill from there. On both sides.

Well, like I said, I think you're a mensch for posting this and taking your fandom lumps without a tantrum. More than I can say for the so called creator. (Or the apparent humongous list of people with an agenda against you? Wow.)

Kita, I was a complete jerk on LJ in roleplaying environs four years ago. I drove away some friends that I really cared about, some acquaintances, and not a few people that I RPed with because of my behavior. If you're talking about the stuff about me in the write up of the S_D suspension over on F_W, I suspect some of those people have been holding grudges against me from 2005, some of those people don't like how I conducted myself on scans_daily and/or butted heads with me there, for some it's a combination of both. For the rest, I dunno.

I'll try. Tomorrow I get to be drugged up and sent into a machine! With my claustrophobia, I'm already in quite the state.

Hang in there. Medical stuff is the pits. But eventually you get to come out of the machine. :)

A wonderful friend is coming with me for the procedure; she's been through something similar. I'll know it's bad if my neurologist shows up halfway through, because they call him if they find something nasty. THEN I can panic, Y/N?

Man, you're getting emails now???? Wow this is getting a lot crazier than I thought. :/ I'm sorry you have to deal with that crap. And while I can look back on these comments and say that we did get quite a bit upset and reacted as such to the book, but you have to remember Kali that these kind of reactions happened on scans_daily ALL THE TIME. I mean, I can think of creators off the top of my head -- Land, Liefeld, Bendis, Miller, and now David -- that were frequently hounded and insulted on that comm for their work. It's not like what you said was any different from the norm. I think after getting comfortable enough in a setting -- and this one being our community -- we just say these things without thinking about it because it's pretty average for us to be shooting off our mouths when we're upset ( ... )

Nope, you're not screened. :-) Nothing is as of now.

But Land, Liefeld, Bendis, Millar, Austen, etc. don't come on the comm (and if they do, they lurk). So, yeah, we rant in a fannish space, ( ... )

So, yeah, we rant in a fannish space, and while I'm sure some of us wish that creators saw what we write, other don't.

Yes, you're right about that. They could very well lurk, and in reality we should just assume they do since it is a public forum, right? At least, in terms of thinking about what comments we want seen and which we don't. At any rate this was just the one instance where it just blew out of proportion.

But policing a comm for comments will be difficult, I'm sure, however, something will probably have to be done now in order to prevent something like this from happening again. I can definitely sympathize with the mods right about now, that much is for sure. :|

Well, Kurt Busiek revealed that he lurked, but he was generally positive about his lurking experience based on the one comment that I saw from him abou the whole debacle.

People are looking for scapegoats and villains everywhere when in reality it was likely a combination of factors that lead to the inevitable closing of scans_daily. I'm glad you're sharing your side of the story, there's a lot of misinformation (and flat out lies) going around.

Take care of yourself.
