Some clarification regarding my part in recent events at scans_daily.

Mar 01, 2009 16:39

I've waffled over the last day over whether or not I should post this. I decided to put it up to clarify a couple of things that are being said the sequence of events that led to the nuking of scans_daily. I'm writing this on very little sleep, so bear with me if things aren't crystal clear and if it's terse. My purpose here isn't to exhaustively go over ( Read more... )

Man, you're getting emails now???? Wow this is getting a lot crazier than I thought. :/ I'm sorry you have to deal with that crap. And while I can look back on these comments and say that we did get quite a bit upset and reacted as such to the book, but you have to remember Kali that these kind of reactions happened on scans_daily ALL THE TIME. I mean, I can think of creators off the top of my head -- Land, Liefeld, Bendis, Miller, and now David -- that were frequently hounded and insulted on that comm for their work. It's not like what you said was any different from the norm. I think after getting comfortable enough in a setting -- and this one being our community -- we just say these things without thinking about it because it's pretty average for us to be shooting off our mouths when we're upset ( ... )

Nope, you're not screened. :-) Nothing is as of now.

But Land, Liefeld, Bendis, Millar, Austen, etc. don't come on the comm (and if they do, they lurk). So, yeah, we rant in a fannish space, ( ... )

So, yeah, we rant in a fannish space, and while I'm sure some of us wish that creators saw what we write, other don't.

Yes, you're right about that. They could very well lurk, and in reality we should just assume they do since it is a public forum, right? At least, in terms of thinking about what comments we want seen and which we don't. At any rate this was just the one instance where it just blew out of proportion.

But policing a comm for comments will be difficult, I'm sure, however, something will probably have to be done now in order to prevent something like this from happening again. I can definitely sympathize with the mods right about now, that much is for sure. :|

Well, Kurt Busiek revealed that he lurked, but he was generally positive about his lurking experience based on the one comment that I saw from him abou the whole debacle.

This is the thing that kills me about ALL of this. I've seen far far worse things posted (inferences to peoples' sexual preferences, for instance) about creators, and bashing of them constantly. But in this one instance, it's now bad?

Sigh.

I know, and that's something people have pointed out to PAD numerous times over the past few days to AT LEAST calm him down about the whole threat thing. From a fan's pov I suppose it can be seen as a bit ridiculous to get upset over, but I'd think PAD would at least be accustomed to criticism at this point in his career? Don't get me wrong, I'm not justifying anything that was said against him on that XF post, but he's just reeking of a shit ton of butthurt right now, if his blog is any indication. What went on in the XF #40 post was not much different than any other review discussion I've seen/been part of on S_D...so I'm still a little baffled at the response it caused, at any rate.

I'm just worried I'll never be able to joke about hitting Ron Moore with a frying pan again without getting sued by internet lawyers.
