It is the month of birthdays it seems for these hot mod ladies!!  By the next Wednesday chat, I will also be older!  *throws confetti*  Ah, I am slowly creeping into COUGAR AGE.  However, I have been informed by my other gay ladyfriends that we are called...."lezgers."  I don't even know, guys.  I don't even know.  Anyway.

I've never actually been given constructive criticism. At worst I've had someone tell me that my story was not appropriate for the rating I had it at. They were right, but FF wasn't allowing me to edit at that point, so I couldn't fix it. I fixed it as soon as I could. They were kind of rude, but I did have sort of porn (Friendship By Numbers, parts 3 and 4) marked as K. So yeah. I figured it was valid ( ... )

That anonymous poster doing that to your LJ friend was just so mean. It's unbelievable how people can be so insensitive sometimes. :(

I, too, am a bit disturbed by the anon poster. I can understand your hate.

I also must applaud you for giving constructive criticism. Not many people do it.

I did, however, have the misfortune of seeing an anonymous poster in a meme (fandom secrets, I think) break friends lock, out someone's pairing preferences in an obscure fandom (she only ever posted about the pairing under friends lock), and join in an orgy of belittlement. They person they attacked was one of the first people I'd met on LJ, and incredibly nice to me when I was very, very new to writing and LJ. She mostly disappeared after that. I hate that anonymous poster.

That's awful. I'm cannot stand the actions people take to make them feel better about themselves.

I think concrit is incredibly important, especially when done the right way, so, well done! Those are the kinds of "reviews" that people should look forward to getting. We're all amateurs and while we all love encouragement and kind words, it's the pointed, well-thought out crits and concerns that help us be better writers. *nod nod*

Generally, I don't leave reviews if I have anything negative to say because I'm always afraid I'm going to offend the author somehow, even if I try my very hardest to be constructive. And when I do, I always try to mention a thing or two I did like about the story. I think constructive criticism ultimately comes down to politeness. Like, telling me "you have a few grammar mistakes you could check out, but otherwise it's good" is a lot more constructive than "your grammar sucks, fix it". You know?

I think that when posing the topic correctly and with sensitivity, it can be more than helpful for an author. Although I completely understand that no one wants to offend anyone accidentally, especially another author.

Hmm, I can't say much about fics but I used to be a very dedicated AMV maker when I first started participating in fandom (FFXII). In those days, I used to get a lot of flak from some immature fans for making vids for a less popular pairing--you know, the usual 'this pairing sucks!', 'eww, he's too old for her!', 'my pairing is better than yours!' sort of flames 83 It can be hurtful but I usually just ignore them because I realised that nothing I say would change their minds and I rather channel my energy in producing more AMVs. Thanks to the flamers, I ended up making more AMVs to 1) spite the hell out of them; 2) thank my friends who had been supportive when I needed them :D The flames eventually stopped, I guess they decided that their flames weren't getting to me, if anything, it was fuelling me to be more productive :P ( ... )

I can't really say I've ever been flamed before online... but there are reasons. Mainly because I don't post outside of my journal very often; and that's f-locked (I have inferiority issues lol not afraid of flames or unkind words or the like... just issues with my writing in general) But when I see a friends work or anyone's really get yanked on, it makes me wonder why anyone would take the time to do that. If you didn't like something wouldn't the logical thing be to not waste anymore time on it? Yeah. BUT we all know internets isn't logical. So we get flamers and trolls and sometimes the occasional cod. At least if you get an in depth flame that shows the person read what you wrote... it's kinda bonus. I mean if it messed up their day enough for them to tell you about, one kinda has to go "HEH HEH HEH that's what you get. I didn't tell you to read it." At least this is my outlook. Then again I am too apathetic for my own good sometimes. =_ ( ... )

THIS.

If I start reading something and I don't like it I just...close the window and move on! I feel like that makes sense...right?

And I think, as writers, we are all very critical of ourselves and our skill--I think it's only natural. :D

IRL, I have a hard time telling people I don't like them - if I don't like a person, I just ignore that person, and we become acquaintances, are polite with each other, but are not friends. That's how I am with reviews, too - if I don't like a story, I will not leave reviews. If I like it, I will flail all over it like nobody's business. XD ( ... )

There's something wrong with them if they don't like your work.

I'm the same way! If I have a choice of ignoring and moving on, or creating drama, you bet I'll choose the former. Especially fandom. I come to fandom when I want a break from real life's stress. I don't need to turn to even more stress.

Cool response, Ali. :)

Oh shush, you. <3
