Kindle!

I superfail at updating. It's too warm here (shhhh, Australians!) to do anything but laze about; I'm writing fic, and that's about it. Part of the reason why I have this blog is so I can record my life, and look back on what I did, later. So, y'know, must try harder. Exciting news though - I has a Kindle! :D :D ( Read more... )

Kindle!

The case I have is pretty basic-much like this http://www.amazon.com/Acase-Classic-Generation-Protector-Invisible/dp/B004EHJQBY/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1309877402&sr=8-10 but I don't remember which one I got specifically anymore. I wanted one that opened like a book so I could hold it like a book- and I like that when it is closed it's pretty bomb-proof. Additionally, my book light fits on the cover well so I can read in peace when the kids are sleeping nearby. The screen protector wasn't something I used- it made the screen more shiny and less book-like. Really though, I don't have a problem with scratches or anything- it's not like you are going to drag you fingernails over the screen on a constant basis.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the cover if it wasn't for the fact that I'm always taking books WITH me. I rarely, if ever, just sit down and read at home. So I'll mainly be using it while travelling or when I'm going somewhere, hence, proper cover. I got a skin and a leather cover like the one you linked to, but in pink. I don't like pink much, but it was the most interesting color. :)

"the ebook library" lots of fandoms, various fics.

"calibre" a conversion tool. If the fic you want is not at that ebook archive ^ then all you need to do is: find the fic, copy it to a document, save it to desktop for easy to find purposes, use calibre to convert the document into an ebook, transfer it to your kindle and voila!

Or you could save the same book to a RTF format, add extra space for a "book cover" and then send that to your kindle. (That is if it handles rtf.) However this take up more space than an ebook which is why the calibre tool is prefered.

"FLAG service" do you have any fic that you love on fanfiction.net or fiction.press? Then this is the tool for you. It converts the whole fic for you and then you just move it. There's a similar thing for fic on LJ but I don't know where to find it.

Any Archive of Our Own fic can be turned into ebook easily. Just go to the download button once you find your fic there.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/autokindle/ just stumbled upon this. An autokindle ebook converter program.

http://www.halcyon-shift.net/gift-shop/squeebook/ apparently can be used for LJ and Dreamwidth. I've never tried it so can't say whether or not its good.

Wow - thank you so much for all of this - that's awesomely useful! :D :D

Most of the fics I want are on A03, so that makes it very easy for me indeed.

Thanks for all the info! I can definitely use that. Kat - if its not on Amazon you usually need a way to translate it into a format the Kindle can read. It can read PDFs but the type is rather small. I have a much older Kindle so I may not be up to date with the current ones. The cover I got for the kindle covers the back and has a hard flap to close on the front. It has a hinge of sometype that securely fastens to the kindle and stays on while it is being read. I saw someone once with a cover that can be used as a stand so she could easily eat and read at the same time. That was cool. I mostly wanted something to protect the screen so it wouldn't get scratched. Love my Kindle, but I wish I could update it. :)

I'm a fan of the leather M-edge ones. They come in different styles and you can get them on Amazon. Mine is blue leather, and has served me well.

I was looking at those, but I ended up getting one of the standard Amazon ones with a built in light. My mom has one, and she's very happy with hers.

Also, this com is a good resource to have http://elibrarians.livejournal.com/profile

The best converter is a program called Calibre, which you can download for free. For fic, save as a PDF and convert to .mobi
