Human Interest, closure

madlori has finished her BBM epic Human Interest. A very satisfying end to this drawn-out story, although I feel that the narrative has drifted a long way from the core of Annie Proulx's short story. The original doesn't allow for much character development and the way I see it, the chances that Ennis would ever have overcome his deep-rooted fears all on ( Read more... )

I'm writing the next chapter of Flint and Steel. I just wrote one with Dr. Crane hypnotizing Ennis. I felt that wouldn't be out of place in 1968. I plan to have Ennis suffer a regression of sorts with a subsequent burst of rage. I want to type more, but I'd be spoiling the plot for you. Please let me know if it's all right to ask you a few questions when you have time.

This is good news indeed! You left enough clues for me to suspect you might have an emotional clean-out in mind for Ennis. I am very grateful you are braving this subject. Of course, I will give you as much support as I possibly can although I have to warn you that I am in no way a certified expert on trauma. What I know about it is by way of reading, personal experience and through trauma therapy. Drawing from that I will gladly answer any questions.

About hypnotherapy I know very little, I am afraid. For the sixties it may indeed be the only available non-invasive method (except for psychoanalysis which would have been totally unaffordable to Ennis), bearing in mind that any kind of 'mental abnormity' was still treated with electroconvulsive therapy, psychiatric drugs or worst, frontal lobotomy. Whether hypnotherapy can actually be effective in 'curing' trauma I am inclined to question, but for the sake of the story I would certainly be willing to suspend disbelief, knowing that I want Ennis to be a 'survivor', not a 'victim' like ( ... )

Thank you for your gracious reply. You've already helped by reminding me that frontal lobotomies were once performed routinely on incorrigible criminals in American prisons. What a terrible fate.

I don't plan to have Dr. Crane cure Ennis with hypnotherapy, but only to release the memories that Ennis cannot bear to face. I don't want to reveal plot points, but I do plan a "breakdown" preceded by a spectacular display of poor impulse control and unbridled rage. (Only bad people will be hurt :)

I'm thinking that in the aftermath, Ennis will be drained emotionally, and susceptible to a good influence, like someone that loves him. Again, I don't want to give away any surprises, but do you see this as a realistic outcome?

HI read Smoke and Mirrors and think you are doing fine so far. Although Ennis's ypnotherapy and EMDR k_tinxx March 9 2006, 23:43:05 UTC
I read Smoke and Mirrors and think you are doing fine so far. Although Ennis's exit from the hypnotic state was a bit unclear for me. As fas as I know, there are two ways a hypnotic state can (or rather should) be exited: 1) by a smooth and guided transition, a carefully conducted phase of bringing the person back to consciousness and 2) by an immediate switch, usually prepared by the hypnotist with the client still 'under' and either vocally induced by a keyword or by a snap of fingers or any other sharp sound ( ... )
