I bought a headlice comb at the drugstore. I've read that the ones with metal teeth work the best, so I got one with metal teeth ( ... )

I did a similar thing to the olive oil thing on the boys' hair many years ago. Instead I used conditioner for an hour and that worked just as well and is easier to get out.

D came home with lice when N was quite young and we managed to get rid of it with D (I think we cut his hair quite short) but it was ages to get rid of it with N. His hair was quite fine and the comb didn't do much good. I wasn't willing to cut his hair so short at first but we eventually did have to do that to eliminate his problem. When he was older, I was able to use the comb along with conditioner.

I only used commercial products the first time or two and then decided it was a waste of money. Fortunately there have been no lice infestation in our house lately.

I tried the conditioner on the boys hair the first time they got it, it did NOTHING. still live lice after using it, and the nits were just as difficult to get out. The boys did seem to respond well to the commercial treatments (as Alicen did the first couple times she got it). We battled it off and on this summer with her, it would seem to go away for a couple weeks and then come roaring back after being at baseball with the boys or being somewhere that her hair must have gotten in contact with something...I have NO idea what or where.
I hope the no lice continues at your house.

I very much sympathise with you. I remember the time when I thought we'd never completely be rid of it. I think that was the first two years that D was in school. Fortunately, the school never excluded children with lice because it's not a health hazard. It was still quite frustrating though.
