As Ran-kun opens the door to this particular study, he'll find he's hit jackpot. Not only has he found the Shinichi he is looking for -- other Conans barely tolerate being treated as a child. They would object strongly to sitting on someone else's lap. This one is not only happy where he is, but is cuddling -- but he's got found a bonus Shinichi he wasn't even looking for! Shinichi glances up as Ran enters, nodding in greeting but quickly turning his attention back to the story that Conan is reading him, as engrossed as though he is hearing it for the first time.

Which, considering the katana resting on the floor beside their armchair, he just might be.

Ran sighed.

"You're really smart about some things, Shinichi, but when it comes to the girl mes you're usually pretty stupid." Pause. "And with the girl Hattoris too. Anyway, I bet she'd shoot it down just because you're acting like you've already made up everyone's minds for them."

"You're the one who's stupid!" Conan pulled himself up so that he was standing on the windowseat facing Ran, his body blocking his hand, unfastening the window's catch, from view. "She'll like my idea once I have it properly! Ideas my thing, not yours!"

What was he doing standing by the window like that? Suspicious, Ran got to his feet.

"Then why not let her help? She just wants to know what's going on! It isn't like leaving her out of things is gonna help anything!"

Uh-oh. Conan readied his jump rope discreetly.

"Being strong and saving people is Ran's thing. Being tricky and taking stuff is Kaito's. Ideas are the only thing I'm good at. You're saying they don't need me, right?"

"What?" Ran stopped, taken off guard by that statement. "No! You're their best friend! Why wouldn't they need you?"

"You said it yourself. I'm stupid and my ideas are stupid."

Great Escape is paused so that Conan can glare at Ran.

"I said you're stupid when it comes to dealing with your Ran," the older boy corrected, glaring right back. "And expecting people to just go along with whatever you come up with. That doesn't mean your ideas are bad."

"That's not what you said before. Any way, I'm not staying here to listen to you."

Conan pushed the window open. It would be so much easier if he could just aim at the building across the street, but with the mansion's lack of neighbours he had to use precious seconds to angle at a window ledge above.

"It is so, you just weren't-- hey!!"

Oh, he really should have seen that coming. Ran lost a second himself to surprise, but then he was running after Conan, making to grab the back of the younger boy's jacket. "No you don't!"

It was just as well that Conan had practice at this. He was out the window, on the rope before Ran could grab him, although the karateka's grab did close on the rope. There went any chance of pulling the rope up after himself and making a complete getaway, Conan thought, concentrating on climbing up the remaining rope as quickly as possible.

"Get back here, you coward!" Scowling and very much irritated, Ran pulled -- hard -- on the rope, without stopping to think of what would happen if the anchoring end came loose.

"I'm not a coward!" Conan certainly didn't seem to care of the danger he was in, pausing his climb and letting go of the rope with one hand to pull a face at Ran. "You're just a big jerk who picks on people smaller than you."

Ran glared sullenly back. "I'm just trying to talk to you and you're running away!" he retorted, not loosening his grip on the rope. "I'm sorry I called you stupid, okay?"

Even if it had been true.

"You're not trying to talk to me," Conan shot back. "You're forcing me to talk to you. You didn't ask if I wanted to talk -- you made me. And you wouldn't let me out the door and now you're chasing me. I'm not letting anyone bully me."
