This was a very odd Christmas for me; some really high points and low points. Some old traditions unexpectedly brought back, and some things mucked. Julbord and full holiday report after the cut:
The above is a link to a search I did on Advent calendars on Amazon.com. Many without sweets some with toys some not. My kids love the Playmobil one but they are quite a bit younger than Mere. She may like one that just counts down with doors opening or things to transfer from one location to another. Also, you may want to look into the idea of incorporating lighting an Advent wreath each Sunday of Advent instead. It is only weekly and may add something different the calendar did not.
I have been instructed to hide the walking sticks, as the Mommy Annoyance levels have become extreme. No, dear, it's not a baton and you can't twirl it.
Oops. I forgot how energetic kids get with sticks. Sorry. Tell her it is for walking in the woods and hills, not in the house. And maybe smiting of foes, but that is advanced work. But the big one is for you if you need any help keeping stable on your feet.
We now have two artificial trees. DH wanted one that was smaller than the older one, which takes up a fair chunk of space in the living room. The new one has fiber optics worked in amongst the "needles", and a rotating color disk above the lamp in the base. So when the tree is on, it twinkles. Not a real tree, but it definitely has a cool factor.
Next year, we will also be adding a string of lights, so we can plug in the assorted ornaments that have light and/or sound.

I, too, was resistant when my husband started talking about an artificial tree. He finally sold me on the fire safety argument (bedrooms including the one containing baby upstairs, tree downstairs)(and, by the way, everyone should check out the new LED lights - they barely feel warm to the touch after hours of use, so they'd be a great idea for a real, somewhat dried-out tree). The main thing I was surprised to find I like about our fake tree is that we can leave it up for a month without needle drop, etc. - my husband isn't too keen on the extended holiday decorations, but you can't have everything, right?
