second real day of vacation

Wake up, eat breakfast. More conversation with additional new people, planning and some confusion about the room. Then, bundle up and go out driving. Hit the museum, see lots of stuff. Including a pretty amazing immersive geophysical data visualization. Lunch at a rustic sandwich joint, and then to the ice park ( Read more... )

That's freakin amazing! I mean that thorn must have been crazy to carve. And the mice are adorable! Just, wow.

How cool is that??!! When you aren't too pooped I want to hear more about it. Did you see any in progress? Are these done with chainsaws?

They're done with a lot of tools. Later on, we'll have pictures of an ice carver's workshop, including maquettes (also in ice) for this piece. They have chainsaws, hot knives, chisels, clothing irons, and some weirder things. The guy that did this sculpture machine mills lots of custom tools in steel in iron that he sells to ice the ice carving community. Some of them are fairly straightforward, like a rotary rasp for attachment to a power drill. But some of them just look weird, and I can't figure out what they're for.

You can apparently do just about anything with chisels, a bottle of water, and a point heat source like a blowtorch. But having all the other tools available seems to make things lots easier. Particularly the chainsaws.
