What Does it Take to Be Rich?

A while ago I had two polls on what it takes to be considered rich. Now Gallup has stolen my idea taken two very similar polls, one on income and one on assets.

According to Gallup, the median income level people thought constituted rich was $150,000, and the median amount of assets was $1,000,000 ( Read more... )

I suspect that your poll was skewed by the geographic distribution of respondents. If you normalize by "median income" of the nation and of the respondent, you may find more concordance.

And skewed by education. The Gallup median is $200,000 income for college graduates and half that for non.

At one time we had a household income that approached the number in the Gallup poll. That still wasn't enough to buy a house around here. But did I feel well off? Pretty much. Could we have afforded to pay slightly higher taxes? Yes, we could have.
