I had no idea that Ax (Emanuel) was born in Lviv, Ukraine! I thought he had been born in the US. But Ax is a Central European name - in mathematics, J. Ax of Ax-Kochen appears very often in connections between Model Theory and Number Theory.

So, the actual ab initio axiomatization seems to be used in a very weak way for proving the completeness and strong minimality of the resulting theory. The fusion techniques and the ab initio ones seem to be more similar than expected.
