Oh, and I have to add, what's up with all this BUYING things with MONEY? Material goods that were made by EVIL CAPITALIST MANUFACTURERS? What if those warm blankets and parkas were made in sweatshops in China, by small, undernourished children? OMG, someone might PROFIT off of all this camping gear!
Odd that they quoted Portland-- I was actually going to mention them as the place the professional homeless winter. High services, not so low of temps.
I'd like to point out that I grew up in a beautiful valley that has a ton of hippies, with a high revolving population; every summer, they end up finding a few dead from trying to live their city kid dreams.
About their best hope is that most can afford those nice "good to -40" mummy-bags, and will probably figure out that they have to be dry.
*Snicker* I'm just waiting for the reports of what will happen when the real homeless start preying on these idiots. Those sleeping bags you mention are definitely going to become a form of wealth, and the homeless are longtime practitioners of redistribution...
And if it gets too (frigidly) hairy, there's always Baja California. The, ah, 5-fingered discount types in Tijuana would be delighted to be able to pick over their stuff and subtract what they don't (or do) need. ;-)
If nothing else, maybe your entry will convince Al-Assad and Saleh and the Khalifas and al-Bashir to just give up on their nations in the Middle East and move to the Great Lakes region or Siberia and try to set up shop there.
They could only dream of both this kind of weather as an impediment to the protestors and the kind of response the protestors are getting.
It's more than just the weather. The protestors in the Midesast are facing genuinely-oppressive states, run by dictators and which are willing to kill to suppress mere dissent. The Occupy Wall Street crowd is trying to throw a rowdy outdoor party and have deluded themselves that they are making a revolution, in a country where dissent is normally safe and easy and there are also fairly easy legitimate ways to change the government.
Put simply: the Occupy Wall Street crowd simply isn't that serious, compared to the Arab Springers. This is independent of whether the Arab Springers are pro-democracy or pro-sharia: the mere fact that the Arab protestors were willing to brave machine-gun fire makes weather only a minor added consideration. Note that the Mideast is not exactly unfamiliar with extreme weather, especially extreme heat.
The lack of winter preparations, when any fool can read a calendar, is but a symptom of this fundamental non-seriousness on the part of the Occupiers

Notice that this kind of soft treatment is happening only in the US. Most anywhere else in the world, especially in say, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, etc, there WILL be bleeding at the very least.

Weren't they like, supposed to be big on redistributing wealth toward the less fortunate?
Oh wait, they mean just toward themselves because they CLEARLY don't mind freeloading off 'freely available stuff' at this art gallery.
