In the one game we played with Coppersmith it seemed pretty useful as the very first thing to pick up, since you're quite likely to have a fair bit of copper for the next few rounds. I don't think either of us ever bought a second one though.
Indeed. It has a pretty good chance of giving you an early gold. It's just a mostly dead card after that. While an early gold is a very good thing, it's probably not worth a permanent card slot. In a deck with remodels or upgrades, though, it probably is an excellent idea.
On the other hand if there's no way to upgrade or get rid of _anything_, then you're always going to have seven copper, and if you have a fairly reliable method of getting extra cards into your hand you'd presumably be quite likely to pair copper with the coppersmith.
