So sinec we decided that the existing Linux rdesktop software would be acceptable for use by SoThin's existing clients we now come to a new stage. We need to be able to install Linux (currently Ubuntu) from a USB drive to client machines. That's already doable but what I need to do is to be able to put in a USB stick, install Linux and then run a ( Read more... )

Might it be ok to use two USB keys? That might avoid the need for you to create a custom install. All the customisations could be on the second USB key.

Of course you also know many PCs wont boot off USB without being told to, and sometimes not even then.

My gut feeling is that doing an "Ubuntu Server" installation is a false compromise. Yes - you have less stuff running and therefore is more "secure"

However, the first thing you say you will install is XWindows stuff so you will be sucking in most of "Ubuntu Desktop" anyway.

I only install "Server" nowadays on machines that will never have a desktop ever. And that is currently a sum total of zero machines.

Cheers for the feedback, Alex. I'm currently looking at the Reconstructor tool that supposedly builds custom installs. I'll take a look at Remastersys too.

I'd be interested how you get on. I'm interested in something slightly different. I want to build disk images which can be used on Amazon EC2 cloud vms. That kind of skips the "install" stage by blatting the whole disk with an already installed image.
