Never had Elias been so grateful for Ruby’s decision to give the Carlisles their spare key.

Now I see what you mean about the timing!

“Not coffee?” Ruby asked, still coming awake after napping during their drive across the city.

Not even black tea, in all likelihood. She's probably about to have herbal.

The hospital had given Ruby a set of scrubs to wear home...

Could be handy for future fancy dress parties.

...the nurse giving Peter a hopeful smile as he took them from her with a “Thank you.”

Ooh, the Masterpiece Contemporary 'thank you.' That's lethal.

He moved to their dresser, pulling open a drawer and finding the pair of ratty sweatpants Ruby preferred to lounge in.

That would be 'broken in', Mr. McCoy, thankyouverymuch.

Fortunately Ruby was soon in his vest, and was able to catch her breath as he helped her to change into her lounge pants.

Awwwww.

“This is going to be miserable,” she said when he was done, her face drawn. That's true. She's probably not quite as used to the constantly-in-the-field guys as having to ( ... )

*g*

Could be handy for future fancy dress parties.

Or for general loafing about the house. Once broken in, they’re quite comfy.

Ooh, the Masterpiece Contemporary 'thank you.' That's lethal.

Peter is *fully* aware of the power of the “Thank You”.

That's true. She's probably not quite as used to the constantly-in-the-field guys as having to grind through the day with injuries.

Fortunately for her!

Not that he couldn't crack into her phone if the need arose.

In truth, Peter would probably arrange to have Mickey hack something. Were it necessary. ;)

One presumes at this point that she's not going to get into the whole 'the hospitals here are like watching reruns of medical shows from the 1960s back home.'

Definitely not.

Do they even have ibuprofen in the PW? Yet?

They’re working on it.

At least paracetamol works on her; there's no way they'd give her aspirin with her current injuries.

No way. Which is why they sent her home with, basically, morphine.

All the evildoers they spend ( ... )

Ruby's reaction the first time she ever heard it directed at someone must have been priceless.

I guess I'm just used to my phone's craptastic security (ooh, four digits).

They’re working on it.

It's considered to be part of the WHO's minimum standards for setting up a proper health care system. (And it's kinda scary how few of the drugs on the full list would even exist in the PW.)

Oh yes. Her jaw would have dropped, and I suspect she might have lost focus for a moment or two. And earned a tease from Elias: "You never react like that when I thank you for something," accompanied by a wink.

Absolutely. PW is *waaaaaaay* behind on medical care. There are doctors who try their best, of course, but without the right meds they really can't do much.

Poor Ruby. And Elias is a wreck. Thank goodness for good friends to take charge. How long after Rose and Peter's wedding is this? Obviously Elias and Ruby have not had their children yet and they'd come along well before Lucy.

Nailing down the timeframe of this is still a work in progress. It's currently listed as "year two"; my gut says it's really more like "year four". But I need to do a spot of research before I lock that down.

It was so nice to see the four of them together again! Not for the reason that they were obviously but still :D

I feel more sorry for Elias at this point because even though Ruby is in lots of pain, Elias really hadn't had time to process events and I can see how it would all come crashing down on him. Poor thing!

Can't wait to read more!

This is pretty much the first time I've written the four of them together for more than, say, half-a-page (eg, their first dinner together in London). It was fun!

Poor thing!

*ruffles Elias's hair* He'll be allright. Eventually. Ish.

I wonder if Rose and Peter will get to talking about the day, Rose saying something sympathetic about poor Elias, and Peter seething and snarking in response about how often she puts him through the same thing.

Elias and Peter have increasingly similar backgrounds -- loss of family, traumatic experiences, wives with close calls. It adds depth to their camaraderie.

Hm. I don't think so, to be honest--by this point, they've kind of been forced to make their peace with Rose's job, and everything that goes with it. That's not to say Peter wouldn't mention that he sympathizes with Elias's predicament, but I think it would be more of a casual observation, free of ulterior motives or passive/aggressive sniping. And Rose, of course, *knows* that Peter's been in the same situation; she doesn't need him to tell her.

In fact, the more I think about it the more I think it is that Rose herself would mention the parallels first.

Elias and Peter have increasingly similar backgrounds -- loss of family, traumatic experiences, wives with close calls. It adds depth to their camaraderie.

Quite true. But, hopefully, they're still just different enough in background to keep them interesting. ;)

I just feel so terrible for both Elias and Ruby- Ruby because I understand that awful, awful pain and the horrible feeling when your pain meds run out (even if they do make you sick at the same time), and Elias because I'm sure he feels helpless :(

However, I do love how supportive Rose and Peter are- not that they would be anything else, but it's just wonderful to see the friendship that has grown between all of them.

Lovely as usual!

Just imagine how awful those meds must be, for Ruby to decline taking them for the pain. Poor Ruby! And yes, Elias is definitely having a rough go of it, thanks in part to his feeling of complete helplessness and powerlessness.

*cuddles them both*

it's just wonderful to see the friendship that has grown between all of them.

It was a lot of fun to write it--although it made it tricky to keep track of dialogue!
