The Way of Things, Chapter 39

Dec 10, 2007 07:29

Mickey had called them back for a phone call from Jacques, apparently convinced it was urgent. The news ultimately hadn’t been that earth-shattering, although Peter appreciated that he was one of the people expected to be present to hear it. If nothing else, it had provided a nice middle-of-the-day update for the team in Kendal.

The man they’d taken ( Read more... )

First? Wow, that's crazy!

Another lovely chapter as usual :D Glad the team seems to be accepting Peter- I have a feeling he would be in even deeper trouble if he screwed up now! LOL

First indeed. :)

Oh yes. He'd be in very hot water if he screwed up now. I don't see him doing so, though--certainly not intentionally!

Peter found himself wondering about the types of laws which governed Torchwood: Did the organisation have that kind of power, that they could legally interrogate and arrest an employee, without involving any other agency?
Interesting. Might this change how he sees Rose and/or her co-workers at all?

He’d half-hoped working things out with Rose would somehow, magically, cause Swinson to appear, for the case to resolve itself.
Very honest, sort of like a 9-year-old hoping that covering a stain on the carpet might make it go away before anyone else sees it.

He was already worrying about what to do when Rose invariably left; would she get back to London and realize it was a mistake?
For heaven's sakes, Peter, can't you actually believe it'll work out? She's given you reason to think it will.

Torchwood was increasing the resident population of Kendal in leaps and bounds with the number of personnel they were sending north.
I was actually reading a book this weekend that mentioned Kendal, for its mint cakes.

He’d slept with women who ( ... )

Only if they're exceeding their authority. Which they're not (at least, not so far as I've worked out).

For heaven's sakes, Peter, can't you actually believe it'll work out? She's given you reason to think it will.

Poor Peter. I get the feeling that, as long as he lives he'll have moments where he pauses, disbelieving that he's really with Rose.

I was actually reading a book this weekend that mentioned Kendal, for its mint cakes.

Ah, yes, the mint cakes. The wee ones, with dark chocolate, are divine. I can't imagine eating a large one straight-up, though.

I take it all this was before Blackpool? Did he fall for any of these others and get rejected?

This was before Blackpool--and, probably, even before he moved to Kendal. I could see him liking the women well enough, but not falling for them.

Or perhaps they're trying not to embarrass her, since they know she doesn't fall for someone very often? Or maybe they heard about the dressing-down he got about being ( ... )

Sort of the whoopie pie of Kendal, then?

They kind of reminded me of the Andes creme de menthe chocolates, but with a peppermint pattie-type filling.

Again--the *small* ones were definitely tasty; I didn't try the honking huge blocks of mint cake proper.

“Do we really have a dinner reservation?” Her tone seemed to indicate she didn’t believe him, that she possibly thought he used the line as a way to extricate them from the awkward situation inside.
Or to return to their favorite spot of last night?

If they were surprised to see him arrive with a date, they hid it well;
Aww, that just makes me want to hug him.

“Is that tie part of your secret stash of clothes with colour?” she finally asked, a smile curving the corners of her mouth.
He smiled in return. “It is. It routinely gets mocked by the other ties, you know, for being so bright.”
Lol!

She licked her lips slowly as she set it down, and he felt his body immediately react.

She was going to think this was all about sex if he couldn’t get his hormones under control.
Down boy.

How did you come up with Peter's backstory? No wonder he's emotionally traumatized half the time, poor thing.

Her question was simple, but he found himself breathless. He never talked about his family, with anyone. Most people he knew had no idea about ( ... )

Isn't subtext grand?!

I hadn't really given it too much thought when I started this story; it wasn't until P_C and others asked, chapters and chapters ago, that I started to wonder. Many theories and ideas were suggested, some light, some dark; in the end, I went with what my gut said. Peter's life wasn't perfect, but neither was it something from Oliver Twist. His mom died young--I was always sure of that--but he still had a positive female role model, at least for a bit (the gran, who taught him to tie his bowtie). His dad was a man who felt things deeply, and withrdrew into himself as a result--think The Secret Garden, I suppose, if you're looking for a handy reference point--and just kind of let Peter and his (as yet unnamed) brother do what they would. It had to be enough to explain what he did in Blackpool--that is, to make it about more than ( ... )

wanting desperately to find a happy life somewhere; to have a wife to dote on, who would ultimately give him kids to smother in love...

Ah, you do realize that they've not yet pledged their undying love to each other, right? ;)

The thought, when it came, was blinding: he loved her. Really and truly. Not just a passing fancy, not just lust. Love.

...

How had that happened?

Let me tell you Peter - thats exactly how it happens - like a sudden blow to the head. And its wonderful.

Yay! Peter family talk! (Thank you!)

Indeed. Not happy, not horrible, just...what it is.

Family talk is what it is - family talk. Oh - loved the tie comment! Mocking ties! The visuals of Peter at his footboard and the clothing - really all of the descriptions are very vivid and rich. Now, if we could only reach and touch him...

Hubby is home on Wednesday (late) night. So I reread this again and realize that Josh being gone so long makes me sap...because its wonderful even when it tortures you. To quote Incubus *heee* Love hurts. But sometimes it a good hurt. And I feel like I'm alive. *wonders how they're going to handle London-Kendal later*

Lovly.

Oh - loved the tie comment!

Washington, DC is--sartorially speaking--good for very little. But it is AMAZING for ties. Living in this city, I've come to discover that a tie is the key to figuring out the man, which is dead useful in meetings. It's also a great way to start conversation--"Nice tie. Where'd you get it?" is always safe ground. And, well--I just love ties. Not in a kinky way. They just allow for so much personal expression, in a town where that sort of thing is kind of squashed.

Humorously, Office Husband showed up in Peter's very outfit on Thursday. I almost died. Another of the guys today is wearing the outfit, but with a navy suit. For the record--it looks better with black.

Hubby is home on Wednesday (late) night.

Theoretically? Sure! But I'd rather not cause a reactor core meltdown of the readership. ;)

I feel like Eric Roberts; should I go raid the TARDIS wardrobe and find the Gallifreyan Robes? ;)
