The Way of Things, Chapter 39

Dec 10, 2007 07:29

Mickey had called them back for a phone call from Jacques, apparently convinced it was urgent. The news ultimately hadn’t been that earth-shattering, although Peter appreciated that he was one of the people expected to be present to hear it. If nothing else, it had provided a nice middle-of-the-day update for the team in Kendal.

The man they’d taken ( Read more... )

Peter found himself wondering about the types of laws which governed Torchwood: Did the organisation have that kind of power, that they could legally interrogate and arrest an employee, without involving any other agency?
Interesting. Might this change how he sees Rose and/or her co-workers at all?

He’d half-hoped working things out with Rose would somehow, magically, cause Swinson to appear, for the case to resolve itself.
Very honest, sort of like a 9-year-old hoping that covering a stain on the carpet might make it go away before anyone else sees it.

He was already worrying about what to do when Rose invariably left; would she get back to London and realize it was a mistake?
For heaven's sakes, Peter, can't you actually believe it'll work out? She's given you reason to think it will.

Torchwood was increasing the resident population of Kendal in leaps and bounds with the number of personnel they were sending north.
I was actually reading a book this weekend that mentioned Kendal, for its mint cakes.

He’d slept with women who were as talented as courtesans, and women who couldn’t insert tab A into slot B without pictures and a guide-but nothing had approached what he’d experienced the night before.
I take it all this was before Blackpool? Did he fall for any of these others and get rejected?

Earlier in the day, he’d been impressed by the lack of teasing he and Rose had received; as their silence on the subject had persisted for the duration of the day, however, he’d grown worried.
Or perhaps they're trying not to embarrass her, since they know she doesn't fall for someone very often? Or maybe they heard about the dressing-down he got about being unavailable the other night and don't want to make him feel worse?

He took a moment to book a table at a small, popular inn just outside of town, before returning to the interrogation room.
So he doesn't mind being around a bunch of other people on their date-- does that mean he is getting more confident in this thing, despite his insecurities?

he removed each article of clothing, until he was standing in his pants.
Mmmm, eye candy.

The black wool had been tailored to fit his frame years ago,
A suit that fits him? Rose'll be shocked.

“Be careful.” Mickey looked at Peter as he said it, and Peter fought down the urge to look away.
Bad Mickey-- let her have a life.

Only if they're exceeding their authority. Which they're not (at least, not so far as I've worked out).

For heaven's sakes, Peter, can't you actually believe it'll work out? She's given you reason to think it will.

Poor Peter. I get the feeling that, as long as he lives he'll have moments where he pauses, disbelieving that he's really with Rose.

I was actually reading a book this weekend that mentioned Kendal, for its mint cakes.

Ah, yes, the mint cakes. The wee ones, with dark chocolate, are divine. I can't imagine eating a large one straight-up, though.

This was before Blackpool--and, probably, even before he moved to Kendal. I could see him liking the women well enough, but not falling for them.

Or perhaps they're trying not to embarrass her, since they know she doesn't fall for someone very often? Or maybe they heard about the dressing-down he got about being unavailable the other night and don't want to make him feel worse?

Exactly the points I had in mind when I had the team stay silent. But Peter's still not used to people doing things to him for good reasons, or for him at all.

does that mean he is getting more confident in this thing, despite his insecurities?

Indeed he is.

Mmmm, eye candy.

Quite!

Bad Mickey-- let her have a life.

Mickey's sitll coming down from being Rightfully Furious on Rose's Behalf; small peeks of that will still sneak through, even though she's clearly happy again.

Sort of the whoopie pie of Kendal, then?

They kind of reminded me of the Andes creme de menthe chocolates, but with a peppermint pattie-type filling.

Again--the *small* ones were definitely tasty; I didn't try the honking huge blocks of mint cake proper.

I do wonder if some of the professional outdoors places might not sell them. They are, after all, geared towards hikers and climbers and the like.

Now I'm curious... ;)

If you find some let me know-- I'm curious about eating the mint cakes too-- I've only read about them.

Hmmmm...I'll have to do some hunting. In a pinch, I was thinking of hopping over there in January, if time and budget allowed (Muji run!)--and that's a big "if".

Good news on the local front: I was correct, and Wegmans does indeed sell Hoops, which I dutifully reported to jlrpuck. $2.59 a can, but hey, it's there at the store and you're not having to pay to ship. I picked up a couple of cans: if you're having trouble finding it, let me know and I can chuck one or two into the package I'm getting ready to send ya.
