He was there to meet with Lois and Pieter - today they were doing an ultrasound, and the possibility existed that Pieter could make a gender determination.

The morning papers changed that.   He arrives at the brownstone, looking for his wife primarily but for any of the other JSA regarding what happened with Alan.

As the Last Son of Krypton alights upon the doorstep of the brownstone, the front door happens to be open in just at that moment.

Ted Grant, Rick Tyler and Ma Hunkle all seem to be on their way out, dressed in their civilian attire.
The three look up in surprise and then relief as they encounter the massive frame of superman at the front door.

"Oh my! You startled me. Hello Superman." begins Ma sweetly.
"We were just on our way to drive our to Gotham and visit poor Molly."

Rick raises his hand vaguely in an attempt for a casual 'Hi' behind Ted and Ma. Cat's got his tongue right now. Despite all he's been through with the JSA, Superman still remains an awe inspiring legend in hi mind and it's daunting to be so caught off guard.

"Uh, hi." he manages.

Ted on the other hand, is a long time veteran of the cape and cowl gig. Sure Superman impresses the whiskers off him, hell it's SUPERMAN, but he's much more practiced at the 'cool cat' demeanor.
"Hey big blue."

Clark manages a smile. He knows the occasion is somber, so it's not the 50 kilowatt version that people normally see from him. "Hi everyone. I was actually here to see Dr. Mid-Nite, but I had heard about what happened with Alan. Is Molly OK?"

She's showing. Heaven help her, people can look at Lois Lane now and think, That girl's getting pudgy. In Clark's Smallville t-shirt and leggings, she emerges from the kitchen gnawing on something hot and sweet of Ma's creation.

"Oh. Um...hi."

Goofy smile.

Superman walks in after talking to the trio leaving the building. He's genial, but a bit distracted. "Hello." He looks around. "We're pretty much alone at the moment. I take it you know about Alan."

Lois nods once before putting a hand on Clark's chest to give him a kiss. "I did. I...it's hard to believe. Any of it. Can you help them at all?"

"Not at the moment. I did offer my help to Wildcat. Aside from my obvious desire to help, if I'm going to be around regularly at the Brownstone, I should be working more regularly with the JSA, before people actually wonder what I'm doing here all the time." He pauses. "But if they need me, they'll have me."

It's been a long day for Dr. Mid-Nite.

Shuttling back and forth between Gotham City and the Brownstone. Stabilizing dear friends as best he can.

But he's not one to miss an appointment.

"Hello, Superman," he manages, in a relatively upbeat voice, considering. No sense letting tragedy intrude on what should be an exciting day for them. "I trust you're well?"

"As well as can be expected, given the circumstances." Superman's expression softens. "Don't feel as if you have to keep up any sort of facade. What happened to Alan is severely on everyone's hearts, as it should be."

The doctor nods somberly.

"I have faith that things may not be what they appear, but I've prayed for them nonetheless. For the moment, though, I've done all I can do. Let's get you two to the lab, then, so we can take a moment to revel in the other end of the circle of life."

Lois nods to that. "If there's anything we can do..." She looks and sounds and feels helpless. Taking Clark's hand, she walks toward the lab that is by now all too familiar to her.

A boy. A Superboy. A new last son of Krypton. Don't cry, Lane. Suck it up. You're a Pulitzer Prize winner. "Clark...."

Screw it.

She cries. Happy tears. Her smile could light all of Kansas.

Yep. Happy tears work for Kal as well.

"I guess this would potentially make me the second-to-last son of Krypton, wouldn't it?"

Lois tugs on Clark's hand to bring him close enough for a kiss. Luthor and his machinations about their child are a long way away, keeping company with any other speed bumps and problems in their complex lives. At this moment, Kal-El and his wife are nothing more than parents-to-be celebrating wonderful news about a perfectly healthy unborn son. Nothing more human than that.

Dr. Cross gives them their moment. Yet is compelled to respond to Kal's line.

"I'd call him the Last Grandson of Krypton."
