Then & Now
“Is that what you’re wearing?” he heard the slight shrill in his voice at the sight of her in her beach outfit.

“Why, what’s wrong with it?” Rose turned around causing her incredibly short skirt to lift even higher. She had paired it with a black bikini top. It showed off her toned arms and stomach. Seeing so much of her skin suddenly was…interesting. Where she had gotten the confidence, he didn’t really know.

The sight of her, however, made him…slightly uncomfortable.

“It’s the beach, yeah? Or is it some sort of frozen beach?” she looked confused.

“No, it’s a run-of-the-mill each. It’s just that…you’re so…” naked, he finished in his thoughts.

Rose rolled her eyes and grabbed her towel and tote bag from the console chair. “How about you? You’re going to roast in that thing,” she pointed at his leather jacket.

Exasperated because of the way his hearts were pumping, he shrugged off the jacket, leaving him only in his dark blue jumper. He threw the garment over the railing.

“Satisfied?” he felt oddly exposed.

He watched her as she roamed over his chest with her eyes. Somewhat flustered, she let out a breathy, “Getting’ there,” before bouncing out the doors.

The Doctor smiled at the implication of her words and followed her out into the sunny day.

They were at the beach and the sun was shining down on them. The Doctor had peeled off his heavy coat and raised the cuffs of his collared shirt. He turned to look at Rose who was sitting under her own pink umbrella. She was wearing white shorts and a purple tank top.

A book sat on her lap and she hadn’t paid any attention to him. It was quite different from the last time they’d been there. He remembered the skimpy black bikini and her laugh as she bounced up and down in the waves.

He missed the way Rose had looked at him then. Like he was it - like nothing could ever happen to her as long as she was with him.

Something had changed.

The look was still there, but it was more guarded now. He only had himself to blame.

“Rose?” he spoke her name in a careful whisper above the sound of the waves crashing onto shore.

“Yea,’” she didn’t even look up at him.

He sighed, “Nevermind.” Maybe it really was too late.

The tone of his voice made her look up, however, and caught her attention, “What is it Doctor?”

The Doctor looked at her, those large amber eyes and saw the hurt there.

“Just…just wanted to talk to you.”

Rose smiled sweetly at him and put down her book, “What about?”

He smiled at her then, a brighter one than what he was used to seeing recently.

And as they sat together, a conversation of adventures they had and would have between them as the sun shined with its rays around them, he knew that things hadn’t really changed all that much.

His hearts still pumped fiercely whenever she was near.
