The Radiance of What Never Was
The Doctor was swinging underneath the console, suspended by slings. He worked quietly and diligently, eager to leave to the next time. Things were still and he idly wondered where Amy and Rory had gone off to.

Perhaps he didn’t want to know.

And then he heard it. That familiar song from long ago.

Too long. Not long enough. A contradiction. Always a contradiction.

It got louder until he felt its rhythm thumping in his head and hearts.

Without thinking, he scrambled out of the entanglement and walked up the steps to the console. He was about to shout to the Tardis what was she thinking when he saw his companions dancing around the console in a gentle sway.

Rory was holding his wife’s hand to his chest, his other arm hugging her around the waist. Amy smiled at him, their eyes lost to each other. The love between them was palpable and it made the Doctor’s hearts break.

Quietly, he walked away and down the corridor to his room. He closed the door to the image of them, to the song that haunted his memories.

Memories of her. He hadn’t thought of her and yet he always thought of her.

That’s who she was, a hum in the background, but always there.

The Doctor ran his fingers through his hair. He missed her. It was the constant that would never go away. He didn’t want her to.

And so he sat there. Staring off into the memories of a woman who was no longer with him, listening to a song that was now only in his mind.
