Happiness & Cake
The Doctor walked towards the kitchen, hyper aware that it was far too quiet in the Tardis. Actually, he hadn’t seen Rose all morning. What was she up to?

It only took one step inside the kitchen to answer that question.

“Happy Birthday!” yelled Rose as she shot some sort of stringy confetti at him. He stood dumbstruck looking at her. She was wearing a party hat and her clothes were covered in what appeared to be flour.

“What…I…what?” he stammered.

She bounced toward him and lifted herself on the tips of her toes to place a party hat on his head. He let her more out of confusion than consent. Then she wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly to her. He put his hands on her back - never needing a reason to hug her.

Too soon, she let go and smiled brightly up at him. Teeth shining and hair bouncing in a ponytail. He could see a delicious looking cake behind her on the counter. It was covered in white frosting and - his mouth watered- were those edible ball bearings?

“But Rose today’s not my birthday.”

Her smile dimmed but didn’t disappear, “So, when is your birthday?”

Good question.

“Uh, actually, don’t know. Been hundreds of years…bit busy, tend to forget.”

“Well then,” she grabbed his hand and cradled it in both of hers. Her warmth made him dizzy, “it could be today, couldn’t it.”

“Well, I suppose it could be but…”

“But nothing - birthdays are meant to be special and you’re…special. It’s the one day that is all your own. The one day where you do what you want and those who love you,” aware of her words - she blushed and then continued, “Make it special for you.” She tugged him forward.

The Doctor smiled at her, his brilliant girl and enveloped her into another hug.

Nearly a thousand years and no one had ever given him a birthday, let alone a party and a cake.

“Thank you,” he whispered. Rose responded by hugging him tighter.

He let go of her but held onto her hand. “Now, that cake looks delicious.”

She smiled, tongue against teeth and said the most beautiful words he’d ever heard.

“Banana cake. Vanilla icing. Edible ball bearings.”

Then all one could hear was the Doctor’s laughter and Rose’s giggling as he rushed to hug her again as happiness resounded in the Tardis.
