I think that's exactly what you should answer, "Three beads and a chicken."
Mom was right, you NEVER ask someone how much they paid for something--and in the rare case that you have to ask you most certainly preface it with, "If you don't mind my asking..."

It reminds me of the joke where the old native american woman asks a traveller what was in the bag. The traveller says "A bottle of wine, I got it for my husband" the native american woman says "Good trade"
