What did you give for it?

One thing that I've been thinking about lately is the odd question, "What did you give for it?"

Apparently, that is Kentuckian for "How much did you pay for that?" And it's a FREQUENT question, anytime I wear something new or have something new or talk about something. People I barely know want to know how much my shirt cost, or how much my shoes cost, or how much my Christmas vacation airfare or hotel set me back.

When I was brought up, one of the etiquette lessons that my mother made sure I knew was that you NEVER ask someone how much they paid for something. That, apparently, is not the rule in Kentucky. People don't think twice about asking.

But the expression, "what did you give for it?" makes me think of Native Americans exchanging pretty beads. Or something. I want to say "Oh, I gave three beads and a chicken."

By the way...the shirt I'm wearing right now? I paid gave $4 for it. (Goody's Going-Out-Of-Business Sale).
