I always found it odd to clap when whoever you're applauding isn't there at all. People don't clap in movies here, but that's probably partly because this is Hong Kong (something like the same reason why people are antisocial here).
But what does happen is people's cellphones ringing. Twice.
GAH! I despise that. "Hello? Yes, I'm in the movies. No, I mean, at the cinema. Yes, we're watching Return of the King? What? What? I can't hear you, all these people here are shouting 'SHUT UP!'. Yes, I think that's quite rude as well!"
