Yesterday in my class we watched the film "The Quiet Man." It's from the early fifties, and it was interesting to see the portrayal of women.  In that time (in the US as well as Ireland), it was perfectly acceptable to beat and drag your wife and be forceful with her

Quiet Man is a great movie. I love the music that goes with the final fight.
One of the few John Wayne movies that doesn't irk me either.
