We're doing serious damage to our kids by teaching them the abject fantasy that other people's opinions don't matter. Success in life is actually primarily driven by other people's opinions, whether that's from customers, voters, your manager, friends, whatever. The unassailability of the opinion is another problem. People use it both to duck responsibility (as in your example) and also to push false egalitarianism, i.e. "that's just your opinion, which is no more valuable than mine."
