We're doing serious damage to our kids by teaching them the abject fantasy that other people's opinions don't matter. Success in life is actually primarily driven by other people's opinions, whether that's from customers, voters, your manager, friends, whatever. You will get nowhere in life if you think you're completely awesome but everyone else has decided you're an asshole.
What we should be teaching kids is that other people's opinions don't matter until your opinion of yourself is in order. Make peace with your own opinion first. Then cultivate the opinions of others.
But for the love of god, don't skip that second step and say it's okay because what you think of yourself is all that matters. Because you're going to get your ass fired.
