We're doing serious damage to our kids by teaching them the abject fantasy that other people's opinions don't matter. Success in life is actually primarily driven by other people's opinions, whether that's from customers, voters, your manager, friends, whatever. I've always thought of it as two different worlds people live in - the physical/material one and social/psychological one. Unless you live alone in the woods the second one is almost as essential as the first one and people's opinions are a very important factor in this one. I guess that that disregarding other people's opinion thing was originally supposed to mean that we have power to independently put together our self image based on a much wider set of elements than just what one person might say or think. And I guess in that respect it's an important lesson - you are not necessarily what people say you are, or at least you don't have to perceive yourself that way. But I guess that important other half is missing indeed - that the way you are perceived is all of you to the person doing the perceiving, and since you share the social reality it might be wise not to neglect this part either...
