I keep trying to explain to G what cats rationale for doing that kind of stuff is. Here it is in a nutshell:

Attention = GOOD

It seems to explain Chester's penchant for licking the underside of my desk. It gets attention from me, and I usually just shove him away which is what he was looking for (hint, he's purring pretty loudly at that point).

Alexandra, I think, is doing something more akin to "hey, glue tastes good". Mostly because I find remains of tape chewed up when no one's been watching her and I have not punished her for it for fear of exactly the kind of positive reinforcement you describe.
