[The sun's just starting to set when Shikamaru makes his way out of the woods, back from his whatever mallynappings are in this AU unintentional vacation out there. What exactly happened is still blurry (disturbing enough when you have an eidetic memory), but hey. He came back from it at least. Not everyone does that.

[Raph doesn't bother answering the books. Shikamaru will see him eventually, leaning against the doorway of the grocery store smoking a cigarette and still reeking from this morning's barn chores. Hell, he hasn't even bothered changing his jeans.

He stops nursing his cigarette long enough to regard Shika's approaching, trying to ignore the burning in his lungs.]

Well look what the cat dragged in.

Don't sound so happy to see me. [He wrinkles his nose at the cigarette smoke, using a hand to brush it away.] And try not to smoke that downwind, will ya? Some of us like being able to breathe.

[He makes no effort to move, but stops smoking enough to cough a few times. Maybe he really should take Mike's advice and quit.]

...hm. That would be kinda- no, that's stupid. He shakes his head, raising his arms to lace his fingers behind his neck.]

[Ragna's definitely been keeping an eye out for Shikamaru's return. As much as he usually doesn't pay the kid much mind when he is around, the fact that he just suddenly disappeared like that brought up a lot of bad memories and feelings. All in all, it wasn't very pleasant.

So hearing his son's voice over the journal just brings a wave of relief over him, though he doesn't really show it except by his gradual appearance at the door of Shikamaru's room. He doesn't say anything, but he's right there. For some reason, Ragna's not really all that surprised that Shikamaru didn't even bother using the door.

But yeah. He can try being a decent father every once in awhile, right?]

In absence of a chair or bed, Shikamaru's seated himself in the sill of the window with his journal. Hearing the door, he looks up from it to the person standing there.]
