Site of the day: Geograph British Isles

The Geograph British Isles project is one in which the organizers hope that in the end, every square meter of the UK will be photographed, uploaded, and appropriate metadata assigned to each image for future geographers/genealogists to use in understanding the culture there today.

What an amazing project.

Wow, I have real mixed emotions about that. I would *love* to be able to see what my ancestors' farms looked like BackInTheDay - but I don't like the currently available images of my backyard being available to anyone at all, anywhere. It makes me want to get big trees, fake ones if necessary. And lots of hedges.

Well, there are pros and cons to this, certainly, same as with the Google StreetView project. You could probably purchase some camouflage material from the local Army Surplus store and lay it over sawhorses or cardboard boxes, etc., to disguise the backyard. Or you could go stand next to Barbra Streisand, who sued the California Coastline Project in 2002 over a similar situation.

I think that cat got out of the bag a long time ago... technology has eclipsed social contracts and polite customs to the point where privacy seems to be for those who can afford the privilege. Everyone else should prepare for short shrift. IMO.
