Chapter 11:

Jin observed their house from the outside. The lights are on, meaning Kazuya was home. He turned the ignition of his car off and then got off, locking the door as he walked up to their front door.

He hesitated. How will I even begin to explain to him?

He didn’t know. But he had to at least try.

You’re already here, Jin. Might as well come in. He opened the door with his key and pushed it open.

The sight that greeted him wasn’t entirely unexpected but still he was surprised. The usual neat-freak Kazuya was slumped on the floor at the living room. He was having a drinking spree, if the bottles of beer beside him were any indication.

Kazuya had the bottle tilted to his lips when Jin came in. “Oh you’re here.” He wasn’t drunk yet. He had just started drinking and he could still clearly understand his surroundings.

Just this once, he wished he was out-of-his-mind drunk instead. That would have numbed him, made him immune from the onslaught of emotions that were striking him full force as he took in Jin’s face.

“I had sex with her,” Jin blurted and nearly face-palmed himself. Smooth Jin, very smooth.

Kazuya chuckled. It wasn’t a happy sound though. “I already figured as much when you didn’t come home last night."

“I’m sorry Kazu but I had to save Eiji.”

“Yeah. You already chose him. What took you so long though? Had fun playing husband to Stephanie?” Kazuya gave out a bitter laugh.

Jin sighed. “You’re drunk. Just…just rest for a while or something.”

“Rest? Do you think I’d be drinking these fucking alcohols if I can rest?” Kazuya snorted. “I tried burying myself in my work. I went to Symmetry early and took on projects that’s not even due for at least a year. That used to divert me for a while. No such luck today. I tried to stick to it though. But I couldn’t. Like a fool I kept thinking, ‘maybe Jin’s home already.’ But I came home and no one was here. Then it came crashing down on me. Why was I so persistent? Why did I ever think that I was enough?”

“Maybe it’s better if I come back later.” Jin turned to go. Maybe it wasn’t a very good idea to talk now.

“If you walk out that door Jin, you can forget about me. Forget that you have a husband!” Kazuya yelled.

Jin convinced himself it was just the alcohol talking. “Rest, Kazuya.” He kept walking towards the door. They’d get nothing but more misunderstandings if they talked with Kazuya in that state.

“Please don’t leave me Jin. I need you. Please…just stay with me.” Kazuya looked up at Jin from his position on the floor.

He meant every word. His pride…what did it matter if Jin was walking away? Because in his alcohol-induced mind, that is what this is. Jin was tired of him. Jin wanted to leave him. For so long, he had deluded himself in thinking that they could live a happy marriage, that Jin would be content with him and him alone. He had ignored every snide comment about them. He had been deaf to the people who were telling him they wouldn’t last. In the end, he was just like a defective product that was being thrown away.

“Let’s give ourselves a few hours of space,” was all Jin said, oblivious of the path Kazuya’s mind was taking.

Kazuya heard Jin’s car speed out of the house.

Jin is leaving!

He tried to stand up but his knees wobbled and he fell down. He made no move to stand up and only spread his arms on either side of him, his eyes staring at the ceiling.

He’s pathetic, isn’t he?

With that thought in mind, he reached for another bottle of beer and drank it. Then he reached for another one…then another…then another…

But the pain wouldn’t stop.

I should follow Jin…

He stood up, slowly this time. Finally, he was able to do it. With shaky steps, he walked towards the door. He didn’t bring anything. There was no point. He was only going to bring Jin back after all.

Should he take the car? No, he couldn’t drive it. Why couldn’t he drive it? He couldn’t remember.

All he remembers is that he should find Jin.

Find Jin. Find Jin. Find Jin.

Those words replayed on his head like a mantra and when a concerned stranger happened to pass by with her car, those were the words he said.

She offered to take him somewhere. He didn’t really understand. He was too drunk. But maybe she’ll take him to Jin.

They ended up at a small café somewhere.

But Jin wasn’t there. So he really couldn’t stay. So while the woman was ordering, he slipped out. More like, staggered out.

He kept walking and walking. But then he must have taken a wrong turn somewhere because he found himself in the shady parts of town.

“Well, well, ain’t the boss gonna love this! Fresh meat!” A burly tattooed man grinned, showing his dirty, yellow teeth.

Alarm bells started to ring in his head. Jin!

“Kazu? Kazuya, I’m back…”

No one answered. Was Kazuya asleep?

Jin walked to the living room and was surprised to find a lot more empty beer bottles than earlier strewn on the coffee table. Some were toppled on the floor.

But Kazuya wasn’t anywhere there.

Did he manage to go up our room?

Somehow, Jin doubted that but still went up to check if Kazuya was indeed in their room.

He wasn’t there.

Jin frowned. Where was Kazuya?

He searched the whole house and when he still couldn’t find him, he fetched his phone and dialed Kazuya’s number. A familiar ring tone blared from outside the room and so Jin went back to the living room. He found Kazuya’s phone on the couch.

He left his phone? He almost never leaves his phone when he goes out…

Jin was getting worried. Basing on the number of bottles he could see, Kazuya was probably dead drunk when he left.

He called up all of Kazuya’s friends. They didn’t know where Kazuya was and they haven’t seen him anytime today.

Koki had even yelled at him.

“Why are you asking me where he is?! He’s your husband! You should know his whereabouts! Maybe he finally got tired of you and decided to leave!”

It was obvious Koki hated him. Well, he couldn’t blame him. Not really.

He left the house and drove to Kazuya’s parents’ house. Maybe his husband is there.

“Jin! What a surprise. Come in,” Kazuya’s mother greeted him.

“Um, it’s okay Mom. I just came to ask if Kazuya is here.” He said hopefully.

“Huh? No, he didn’t come here today. Why? Did you two have a fight?” Mrs. Kamenashi looked at Jin worriedly. The boy looked stressed. Was it really that serious? But Kazuya didn’t tell her anything…

“Sort of,” Jin answered sheepishly. He was admittedly ashamed to face Kazuya’s parents like this. He didn’t know what Kazuya told them. He didn’t know if they knew about Eiji and Stephanie. Probably not. If they knew, Kazuya’s mom probably wouldn’t greet him as warmly as she was treating him now.

“Oh that’s too bad but I’m sure you’ll resolve it soon. Maybe Kazuya just needed some space. Don’t worry, that kid had always wanted to be alone after every fight with his brothers or his friends. He’ll come back after he had some time to think,” Kazuya’s mom assured.

“I hope so.”

He really has a bad feeling about this. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Kazuya needed his help.

When he came home after several fruitless attempts at finding Kazuya, he saw his phone which he just realized he had dropped when he rushed out of the house.

He lifted it and frowned. It wouldn’t turn on. It must have been damaged because of the impact.

He sighed. I’ll just get you fixed tomorrow.

He trudged to their room and dejectedly sat on the bed. Tomorrow, when Kazuya comes back, he’ll apologize for walking out and he’ll talk to him properly. They should resolve their problems in a mature way. Running away is childish and won’t really help, that much Jin realized.

When Kazuya comes back, we’ll have a decent conversation.

Jin went to sleep with a hopeful disposition.

However, the next day started and ended without Kazuya. Day after day, there was no sign of him. No calls, no texts, no emails, nothing!

Several months passed and still Kazuya still did not come back. He just…disappeared.

At first, he was beside himself with worry. Nothing could calm him down. He was even planning to ask for a search party for him but when he went to Symmetry, an employee told him Kazuya had sent his resignation through email and was going to finish the required projects assigned to him by working at home. That meant Kazuya was alive and well enough to resign on his own and to continue his unfinished projects.

Which means Kazuya really just don’t want to see him.

None of Kazuya’s family and friends told Jin anything. They said they were as clueless as Jin. Jin had a hunch that Tatsuya or Koki at least knew where Kazuya was but just didn’t want to tell him. He talked to them several times. He begged them, threatened them, even borderline harassed them. But still they remained tight-lipped.

He wrote hundreds of emails to Kazuya but none of those were ever answered. Kazuya’s phone too was out of service. He was getting frustrated.

He knew Kazuya was upset but it’s almost a year! If Kazuya wanted out, if he wanted to end their relationship, if he wanted a divorce, then he should have talked to him first.

With all that was happening, Jin was slowly losing hope of ever finding Kazuya.

Where are you, Kazuya?

Kazuya quietly sat on a comfortable chair, his steaming mug of coffee perched delicately between his cold hands, effectively heating him up. The sight out here wasn’t particularly great seeing that it was still kind of dark and quiet in the neighborhood the house was in. It was expected since it was just 3 am in the morning.

He probably shouldn’t even be up so early, let alone be in the balcony where he would instantly feel the cold breeze. It was nearing winter, after all.

He drank his coffee and pulled his sweater tighter to himself. Winter huh?

He never really liked the cold. It reminded him of sad things. His brother’s cold hands as he died…that cold morning he was crying his heart out for Jin’s betrayal…the cold feeling settling at the pit of his stomach one particular night…

He shook his head. He should stop thinking about those things when he’s awake. He’s had enough of them in his nightmares.

“Kazu?”

Kazuya glanced at the man standing at the sliding partition door of the balcony. His hair was in disarray and he was wearing his shirt inside-out. “Good morning Pi. Your shirt is inside-out again.”

Pi frowned. “Oh?” He glanced down at his shirt and yawned at the same time. “Never mind. I’ll take it off again later anyway. Come to bed Kazuya. It’s still early and it’s cold here.”

Kazuya looked at Pi’s sleepy eyes. “Alright.” He stood up and took Pi’s hand.

He glanced one last time at the dark skies before closing the partition door and gratefully sinking into the warm embrace that Pi instantly offered even in his half-awake state.

The gesture was familiar and safe. Although a year ago, he was with a different man. He was with his husband. But things change.

This. This is my life now.

And one day, when the memories no longer haunt him and when the feelings no longer hurt…maybe by then he can finally believe those words…maybe by then his stupid heart can finally move on…

to be continued...

Pi appears again... I know some of you have been waiting for another man for Kazuya but let's all just remember than this is an AKAME fic alright? :)

Comments are very much appreciated!
