I sure like the bricks. Do these streets need repair very often? The streets outside of my house are some kind of blacktop or something, that has been dug up repeatedly for repairing the pipes and stuff underneath, and so it is cracked, patched, bumpy and broken. The bricks look like they would make it easy to repair the street without any trace afterwards, and the workers could use the materials over again without having to bring in 100% new materials and haul away 100% of the old to some landfill. That's what it looks to me, but is that true, or are brick streets a huge maintenance problem?
The streets do not seem to need much repair, but the traffic on them is minimal compared to the other city streets. I have seen City workers pull up the bricks to do work on water pipes beneath and they do save the bricks and then lay them again when finished. It is not uncommon for the old bricks to break from years of use and newer bricks are often used for spot repairs. Unfortunately, I have seen a few of the old street bricks in antique and novelty stores from time to time and I suspect people have taken advantage of being able to grab what they can when the opportunity arises, such as when they are dug up for pipe repairs. There was such a repair just a couple of months ago, a couple of blocks from my apartment and I wish I had snapped a shot! I'll do it next time.
It is beautiful to look at and I often try to see my home area as if I am a tourist instead of a citizen because I'm very critical of the area. I have a tendency to see only its negative aspects! The extreme Christian Right culture doesn't suit me!
