Nichkhun stared at Jaebeom stubbornly, arms folded across his chest.

“I refuse to go.”

Jaebeom winced. He knew that tone. The tone meant Nichkhun had reached his limit and changed from being an all around angel into something far, far, less…angelic. But Jaebeom blatantly ignored this sign as he always did. Nichkhun could be scary, but after seeing the other man pout and pull faces cute enough to put newborn baby animals to shame, it was really difficult to be genuinely afraid.

“Come on, it won’t be that bad. Plus anything’s better than moping around all-”

“I said NO.”

Jaebeom sighed and he put a hand on Nichkhun’s shoulder causing him to flinch and stiffen slightly.

“Look, Khun,” he started softly and Nichkhun slightly relaxed into his touch. “It’s been over a year, man; don’t you think you should at least try to move on?”

For a moment, Nichkhun considered going out with Jaebeom and Taecyeon to the club. He didn’t want to go because they were going to be with Jessica and Tiffany, and he wasn’t feeling being the third…or fifth wheel.

However, he knew Jaebeom was really only inviting him to be a good friend and because he couldn’t stand to sit back and watch Nichkhun become a shut-in (“We’re in college, we should be out partying and getting drunk and laid!”).

“I’m fine, Jay,” Jaebeom gave him a skeptical look but pulled his arm back. “I’m not thinking about her. Honestly.”

As Jaebeom had said, it had been over a year. One year since Nichkhun had his heart broken by the first woman he had ever truly fallen in love with. She had left Nichkhun for another man, saying he was too perfect and that she felt like she could never be good enough for him.

He begged and pleaded for her to stay, throwing away any shreds of his pride he had left, but she left him anyway, his heart torn to pieces. Since the breakup there wasn’t a day he didn’t think about her.

His three closest friends Jaebeom, Taecyeon, and Junsu had all comforted him, trying to mend him from his broken state. They covered for him in his classes and lent him shoulders to cry on until his tears ran dry.

“Oh, stop lying! Since February started you’ve had that look on your face.”

“What look?” Nichkhun said with his eyes narrowed slightly.

Jaebeom pulled the corners of his mouth down and widened his eyes comically, tilting his head to the side. Nichkhun’s eyebrow twitched in annoyance as he deliberated how many times he could hit Jaebeom in the face before he started to fight back or run away.

“I’m leaving.” Nichkhun stated as he turned on his heels and walked toward the door to the apartment the four young men shared.

“I was kidding!” Jaebeom’s arm shot out to grab Nichkhun’s wrist.

“I can’t leave you all alone on V-Day, man. Junsu’s got his own date so he’s not going to be here to keep you company, and we’ve all been worried sick about you.”

Nichkhun couldn’t help but feel bad about causing his friends to be concerned. It was true his disposition had darkened bit by bit as Valentine’s Day arrived. The day was just a sore reminder of his loneliness. Why would he want to be out and watch couples hold hands and make googly eyes at each other?

He had tried to move on, he really had, but after seriously considering spending the rest of his life with her, he knew she wasn’t going to be easy to forget. He had tried to meet other people, but when she had left, she had taken his heart with her. He didn’t have the ability to love anymore.

“I just need some time alone.” Nichkhun turned and gave him a small, reassuring smile. “It’s not like I’m going to go jump off a bridge.”

Jaebeom gave him another look and Nichkhun returned it with an eye roll.

“Could’ve fooled me brah, just saying,” Jaebeom said as he held up his hands.

“…Jay.”

“Yeah?”

“Do you know how much force it takes to break a person’s nose?”

-------

Nichkhun had been sitting on their worn, cheap, white-turned-tan sofa when Jaebeom and Taecyeon finally left for their Valentine’s date. He couldn’t help but wonder who decided it would be wise to go to a club of all places for a first date on one of the (supposedly) most romantic days of the year.

They had left hesitantly, constantly asking him if he was going to be all right as if he were an infant of all things (“Well, Khun, your face is so small sometimes I really can’t tell the difference.”). They even offered to force Junsu to cancel on his date. How two people could sound so sincere and nice when talking about extortion was beyond him, but Nichkhun couldn’t help but appreciate their efforts.

Even after they left he continued residing on the couch, only getting up to make himself a bowl of instant ramen to eat as he flipped through the channels on their secondhand TV, trying to avoid anything that was a Valentine’s Day special. But to his luck, he couldn’t even watch infomercials without something reminding of said holiday.

In an annoyed huff, Nichkhun got up from the couch and decided to take a walk instead, hoping to find at least one place in Seoul that the holiday hadn’t infected.

As he was walking, he found himself outside a seedy looking bar that didn’t have pink hearts plastered to the door as a welcoming sign for lovers.

When he entered, a cloud of stale sweat, cigarettes, and alcohol greeted him. Nichkhun felt slightly comforted by the stench. This place was definitely void of couples.

He sat down on a rusty bar stool and immediately let him his head fall against the cool wooden counter with a resounding thump.

“What can I get for you?”

“Anything, as long as it’s strong. Really strong.” Nichkhun responded to the bartender, his voice slightly muffled.

“Rough day, huh?”

Nichkhun looked up and glanced to his left to see a young man with two already empty glasses sitting in front of him and third that was soon to join them.

“More like rough week; better yet rough month.” Nichkhun answered dryly.

The other boy laughed and Nichkhun turned to face him fully.

“So what about you? You don’t look like you frequent places like these often.” Which was true, his young face and chubby cheeks were out of place in the dimly lit bar, but Nichkhun couldn’t help but think of how much his last sentence sounded like a pick-up line. Was he so desperate that he was unconsciously hitting on boys now?

He shrugged as the bartender set a drink in front of Nichkhun and picked up his own sipping on it casually.

“I’m not exactly in to the whole Valentine’s Day thing,” he said nonchalantly. “What’s the point of it anyway?”

“They have a holiday for mothers and fathers, I guess there needed to be one for lovers, too.” Nichkhun took a cautious sip of his drink, wincing as he did so. Well, he asked for strong and the bartender sure as hell delivered.

The man scoffed and tilted his head back, emptying the rest of the amber liquid down his throat.

“That’s fucking stupid. Lovers have each other, why the hell do they need a holiday?”

It was Nichkhun’s turn to laugh this time. “I’m guessing that means you don’t like it either, then?”

“It’s a bullshit holiday, what’s there to like?”

“It’s disgusting isn’t it? All those people flaunting their relationships, acting-”

“-As if everybody wants to see how affectionate they are with their PDA and shit. Yeah, I know how you feel.”

Their eyes connected and they both broke into wide grins. It was the first time all day that Nichkhun didn’t have to force it out of himself.

Nichkhun held out his hand and clasped it around the young man’s warm one firmly. “I’m Nichkhun.”

He returned the handshake, smiling brightly.

“Wooyoung. Jang Wooyoung.”
