Does qualifying it with 'such degree' help? That's not me being snitty, just trying to clarify what I meant.

Actually, the idea of fanfic started earlier than that, like mid-nineteenth century, when fans wrote parodies and alternate endings of Lewis Carroll's work. There was also fiction based on Jane Austen's characters that started in the 1920's. Although 70's would be official start and recognition of the fanfic culture with Star Trek fandom. /history whore
