stardust_rain's post of yesterday got me thinking, because both arguments that seem to be dominating discussions-"LJ wants fandom gone" vs. "LJ is in heap-big financial trouble"-both seem to have their flaws. If LJ wants fandom gone, why not just yank on the copyright violation angle, which is much more plausible than ZOMGCHILDPORN!? If LJ is in heap-big ( Read more... )

Hi, I work at Six Apart but not on the LJ team, but I thought I might have some perspectives that are useful here. This is my opinion as a team member, not official 6A policy, so please be gentle ( ... )

Sir, this is just my opinion, but I believe the goal of your company is to make money. That much is obvious in any business. I don't believe your company has a grand scheme for world domination, but I cannot shake the feeling I get that something is serious wrong with the direction the company is taking and it scares me ( ... )

Ditto to all of the above. In case Anildash checks back to read comments, I'll just say more explicitly that this "illegal or that was out of line with LJ policy" thing is what many of us are concerned about. First it was illegal material. Then when that didn't actually justify the bannings, it was expanded to this vague "against LJ policy" talking point. Basically, we still don't know what in the world you mean and it's incredibly frustrating.

As someone who isn't in fandom either I find one flaw in your theory which begins with your incomplete explanation of Occam's Razor ( ... )

I really wish someone on the LJ team was as open about things as you seem to be.

I've seen you be a dick in the past, but you've also apologized a lot for things, some you weren't even at fault for, so I've become pretty impressed with you and your attitude about things.

So, yeah. Not much else beyond wanting to say that.

Oh, thanks for more info again. :)

The only semi-helpful notices posted by anyone from LJ are, like yours, "unofficial." What you may think or feel personally -- I'm sorry -- has absolutely nothing to do with what 6A is doing. Why waste your time and ours? Even official statements (we will not put ads in paid journals) are disregarded when the high road is inconvenient ( ... )

I don't think 6A wants to get rid of fandom, per se--I think it wants to sanitize fandom via a combination of deceptive sticks and saccharine carrots. The problem is, creativity is seldom sanitary... and fandom isn't stupid.

Darn it! In another post I took 5 paragraphs to say that. :o)

but I do wish that when we fix problems that occur, or when we clarify misconceptions that get spread around, that the true stories would get as much play as the conspiracy theories

Which is it--do you want "play" or do you want "what happens what happens in the comments, stays in the comments"? When imaginarycircus asked (in her email to you) if the clarifications that had been made in discussions under the recent ljbiz post could be reposted where more people could see it (in an actual post instead of hidden in pages and pages of comments), you weren't real keen on giving those clarifications "play."

To be honest, I don't know much about FanLib, but I did read metafandom's theory, and if we were gonna do something like that *we'd just tell you*.

In case there's confusion on this point, metafandom is a newsletter community that links to interesting discussions in fandom without commentary. The theory isn't metafandom's; it belongs to the original poster.

that was a community

Yes yes! Metafandom's a community that just links to things; they're certainly not responsible for my post (I'm the poster that stardust_rain was responding to here).

Just wanted to thank you (belatedly - I don't subscribe to this community) for clarifying Six Apart's goals from your insider perspective. I'm adding an ETA to that post linking to your answer.

Argh! Sorry, it's an ungodly hour here, and my new kitten keeps trying to chase the pretty lights across the screen. Interferes with reading comprehension a bit. :)

It's a great point, and if anything too nicely phrased. ;) This has been driving me *nuts*, especially because it means it's easier for folks in support or abuse to get more flustered and tired and make mistakes because they're slammed with work all weekend. And because people who are skeptical of us think we're trying "hide" stuff by having it happen on a weekend ( ... )
