I'm really sorry you feel this way; this community is one the best things I've found on LJ. While the bickering was starting to get bad - yesterday seemed, to me, a lot worse than today - I wouldn't say it was atypical of fandom communities, especially one based around topics as controversial as this one. As for the pedophile issue, I think some others have pointed this out: we're for free speech, and that means free speech even for people who we dislike. Admittedly, this place is unlikely to ever be the brilliant, energizing and pro-active place it was Wednesday night, but I feel it is still doing good and it would be a shame to see it go.
There's still the possible issue of accounts which have not yet been unsuspended (and no I don't mean pedophile-supporting ones - I mean even ones nothing to do with child abuse). So I feel there are still issues to be covered.
Hopefully ownership can be transferred to someone else...
I'm very sorry you feel this way *hugs* I love this community, and I've met several cool people here. Please leave it open, and don't let the trolls and idiots spoil it for the rest of us.
There are two ways of looking at this: if the community is closed but not deleted it can always be re-opened, and it will minimize having to read through all the usual "LOL you wankers" trash to get to the genuine comments.
If the community remains open between incidents, it can be a vital source of communication, but it'll be overrun with trolls and arguments like a lot of other things on LJ.
Maybe some mods could be brought on? I know it's a free-speech themed community, but when there's people like 1stbaptist and team_tos and ED trolls trying to actively stop us, we should have some sort of system for dealing with that.
Might as well save yourself (& others) the aggravation. Can always open it again if anything else happens, give announcements as incidents occur and open it for a limited amount of time, say 3 days, then close again.
