Unfortunately the shops are not going to enforce a truthful policy upon their staff because they perceive that it is in their best interests to entice you into the store, by means fair or foul, on the principle that you might buy something once you are there. This is an old retail habit that leads to displaying regularly needed items at the back of the store (so that you have to walk past everything else en route) and every other dirty trick short of outright lies (written down, on display - it's ok to lie on the phone because you can't prove it).

Aw yeah. Somebody definitely needs a punch in that smug patronizing face.

Here, let me help.

(More retail and call-center employees should be like I was. In fact, ALL of them should be. Honest, helpful if you looked like you needed it, out of the way if you didn't, cheerful, not trying to sell you anything you don't want, and goddam competent.)

The only way I've found around this is to get them to provide information - such as saying "Oh, well, what sizes do you have?" and asking them how many of the right ones they actually have in stock. Won't always work, but better than nowt.

There's a Homebase about 5ish minutes up the road from Manor House Tube. You could ask them.
