Even viruses can lead to self discovery

Ever since I was a young child, there's been a symptom of being ill - a feeling, I think, that is very physical indeed but I've never ever been able to describe sufficiently to others. In fact, this lack of description has added to its status as something mysterious and dreadful which has always brought on anxiety fits that an ill adult shouldn't ( Read more... )

We spent an hour on that picture in class just on Friday! My prof tried to draw it, it was great.

So it kind of amuses me in a way that it comes up on my flist just days later. Not that your situation is at all amusing, but, yeah.thing! I make sense in my head.

I know that having words to describe a thing makes me feel a lot better. If I can articulate it, even only imprecisely, I feel much more settled and able to cope with it. I hope the same is true for you.

OH GOD I LOVE YOU.

I knew if I figured out a way to describe it, SOMEONE on my wonderful Flist will be able to give me actual information.

It's quite an odd coincidence, as nadriel gave me a book of strange facts for Christmas and it was described in there, but only in terms of visual perception. I asked people on a forum if "anyone knew the name of a disorder or illness where someone felt as if parts of their body were larger than they actually were", and lo and behold, it was the same thing as in the book.

Also- Yay eeyore!

Well, if it's the same, it's the same. It sounds like it's just a classical migrain symptom, which would make sense given when I get it. At least now I can deal with it better.

Wow, hello, I've no idea who you are, but I have had exactly this sensation when I was ill as a kid. It was so completely bizarre that I never vocalised it to anyone, but I remember it really strongly. Glad I'm not the only one! I think it must just be hypersensitivity having rather odd effects.

And to the poster above, its not that disorder, its not simply a visonary illusion of having big hands, its a much more tactile sensation, of things not fitting properly somehow, your fingers being too large or too fragile at the same time.

Sorry for the gatecrash! This was really interesting to read.

again I say: Both articles state it is not just a visual disorder.

Wow, hello.

Yeah, the AIWS sounds similar but not exact, so I'm not too sure. Gina's right, it's not described as just a visual syndrome, but I have no visual symptoms at all. I'll go with it, though.

I'm so glad you got it too, though. I see we have one mutual friend - you here through friends' friends?

I thought this was something that only happened to me! I used to notice it when I was younger and I had a temperature and it is always the thing that tells me that I am actually ill. In my head it is particularly associated with waking up and having these enormous hands poking over the top of the duvet. It isn't a visual thing and it always goes away when I open my eyes. In fact I woke up like that yesterday morning.
