An anniversary and more on "Becoming Jane"

Wow, my journal here was exactly one year old yesterday! Crazy. Of course, I didn't start using it regularly until a little while later, but still. :)

My goodness, things aren't looking good for "Becoming Jane" over at AustenBlog.com, especially when you read the comments. Things like, "My biggest bugbear is Anne Hathaway. She is spectacularly ( Read more... )

Those aren't good comments. Eek. I do like Anne Hathaway though so maybe I'll feel differently? I hope, lol.

Happy LJ anniversary!

I like Anne Hathaway too, but I don't picture her as British. I hope I like her in it!

Thanks. :)

It is sad that the movie is implying that it was this affair with Tom LeFroy that inspired Jane Austen's masterpieces and romantic genius.

Yeah, that is sad. :( It seems that more and more Jane Austen, or similar stories are getting filled with junk these days.

I'm afraid "Epic Movie" made my blood boil when I saw the trailer at the theater when I went to see Eragon.

Thanks!

I think I like the idea of "Epic Movie" with all the spoofs but the way they go about it is... bleh.

Re: Epic Movie --- Just so long as they leave Lord of the Rings out of it, I'm fine with it... mostly. :D It is sort of a mockery to keep making such "epic" movies, when it's so very obvious that you can only make so many epics before they become somewhat of a nuisance.

Lol. Movies these days. *throws head back in laughter*

I don't think the film is necessarily not going to sit well with big Austen fans. There will always be those diehards who will protest no matter what, but I think, so long as you remember that the foundation of the film's story is strictly "What if?" and fictional, and have an open mind about it, I don't see why you won't be able to enjoy the film strictly on those premises. I understand why many people flinch at the thought that someone out there would dare suggest that the only reason Jane began writing was because of her relationship with Tom. But you could say the same thing with Shakespeare and Shakespeare in Love, somewhat. Is it disappointing and irritating that the film implies that the legendary William Shakespeare was inspired to write "Romeo and Juliet," one of his most popular works, only because of a love affair?

In any case, I'm still excited to see it. :)

And a Happy LJ Anniversary! *confetti*

I agree - I think a fictional take on Jane's life is fun and good. I think a lot of the grumblings comes with how the film is being promoted/made: it's one thing to do it all in fun with a wink, à la "Shakespeare in Love," but it's different if it's being called fact despite the lack proof. But oh, well, there will always be die hard fans who will object no matter what.

I think the film will be good, even if I have some reservations. I won't say no to a good Austen film, at least not until I've seen it. I'm excited!

Aw, thanks! :) *plays with confetti and adds some more*

I like Anne Hathaway, Anna Maxwell Martin, and James McAvoy, and I'm going in knowing that the story is only slightly based on true events, so I'm really looking forward to Becoming Jane =).

"People whinged about Donald Sutherland in P&P until it was pointed out that he was a Canadian, not an American. Then the complaining pretty much stopped."
=O Hahahaha! Wow, I'm glad we American's have such a nice reputation =P.

Ugh, I've never seen those spoof movies (Scary Movie, Date Movie) and I don't plan on starting now =/.

I'm kind of interesting in Blood and Chocolate, because it sounds slightly like a reversed "Twilight" plus Hugh's in it (though the American accent takes away some of the appeal =P). I just checked and the theater I work at isn't getting it, the other theater in town we own is. We can still get in for free over there, but I don't usually make the trip because it feels kind of awkward. I don't know, I might see it *shrugs*.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the actors, too, as well as the Jane Austen story. :)

Haha. Apparently Canadians are so much better! It's almost like we're stuck in the middle of the States and England.

If I don't see "Blood & Chocolate" in theatres, I'll probably see it when it comes out on DVD. It looks interesting!

I'm also waiting for my library to get in "Twilight" so I can finally read it! It's in the online catelogue but I don't think it's available for borrowing yet - I keep checking. :)

I agree with you it's sad that they are judging Anne's performance too soon. Give the girl a chance, you never know :S
