[It isn't easy, having your eyes pried open and forced to look at a truth you never wanted to see. A few days have passed since Martel looked straight at him and explained that what he had done was wrong, and each minute since then as crawled by slowly, weighed down with tension. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong... The word echoes off the walls of ( Read more... )

[Oh what a coincidence that she replies to this very thing. But she's getting rather fidgety, today; this means lots of talking. :|]

I'm not sure what the situation in my world is... nor what races may live there...

[Hmmm, she leans her pen to her chin for a moment. Tap, tap.]

Though I'd like to think people are good to each other.

[His hand hesitates over the page. Of all people... She's the reason for those preposterous doubts; the person whose face and voice haven't left him alone for months. He almost doesn't reply, not knowing what to expect with her. Not wanting to risk treading back to everything he felt that morning...]

[No, there can be no doubts. Everything needs to be set straight, including this.]

What would make you think that?

Well. People are their happiest when they see each other as equals, aren't they? If I were them and I hated someone based on what they were born as, I imagine I would be a bitter and unhappy person.

[ this is a downer note to come home to. ]

There's a lot of discrimination back home. Where I'm from, if you look different or can do something special you're not going to be too well liked. They call those people us mutants.

But I think that we can change that? Already there have been a lot of people changing their minds about things. It's mostly just fear because they're getting all their information from the sort of bozos who want to keep everyone else down.

['Mutants'...that's one he hasn't heard. But special abilities, physical appearances...yes, it's the same.]

People have always feared and rejected those who are different, especially when power is involved. The group that has claimed to be the standard needs an excuse to keep themselves above the others, and they resort to hatred as their weapon.

Do you honestly believe you can trust people who have claimed to change? It is easy to fabricate lies and deceit.

I've seen people change for myself. It can happen.

What specific evidence do you have for such a claim?

I never had a problem with discrimination. I've met all kinds of people. Talking mice and ducks, aliens, princesses and fairies. They're all my friends.

[A beat.]

The way I see it, it doesn't matter what you are; it's who you are that counts.

[...This response makes him want to punch something. So ignorant it's sickening, really.]

Don't be so naive. People are so blinded by their prejudices that they don't bother to look any deeper.

But not everyone's like that. Sure, some people are, but there's a whole bunch of different worlds out there. You can't judge everybody without getting to know them.

I have seen enough to know how the world works. Here I have encountered others whose experiences tell the same story; different worlds are not so different.

And what if you decide to give someone a chance, only to discover that they really are no different from the rest of the world's filth?

There's a fair bit of discrimination in my world; classism, sexism, racism, homophobia. You name it, there's probably someone against it.

But for all the people out there who hate someone else for whatever reason, there's all the people who accept others regardless of their race, sexual orientation, or where they come from.

I've had my fair share of discrimination. It hurts, but I've learned to shrug it off. Some people don't change. Others just need to learn a little.

Acceptance is an illusion. Some just like to think they are above the pettiness of intolerance.

Change, too, is a naive impossibility. What evidence do you have that people are capable of learning? [because he's seen thousands of years tick by without any improvement]

Perhaps. Maybe on some level, we all have our biases and are intolerant toward certain things.

I've had people apologize and change their behavior around me after sitting down and talking to them. A minor thing, but it makes a difference.

What could you possibly say to make them change?

[Kratos is once again trying to get used to the town when he spots Mithos.

The man is torn. Approaching him is probably not a good idea, but if Mithos has seen Kratos already, then walking away would not be a wise move either.

He slows his walking pace down as he decides what kind of action to take.]

[He's mostly trying not to think, because every thought that finds its way into his head is one he hates. Focus on his own footsteps, the sky, the clouds, the trees, anything--

The presence of mana.

Mithos stops. Because while this strong presence is one with which he is very familiar, it is also one he has not felt in a while.]

[His eyes dart, landing on exactly who he expected. Exactly who he doesn't want to see here. Does Martel know? Why didn't she warn-- ...No, he's better off not asking himself those questions. He might not want to know the answers. It might start hurting all over again.

He doesn't say anything, nor does he move any closer. It isn't necessary to address a worthless traitor with anything more than a glare.]

[Upon seeing that glare and knowing for certain that Mithos knows he's there, Kratos sighs.

He can't avoid this.]

...Mithos. [Although he addresses the one who he has worked under for thousands of years, Kratos himself doesn't come any closer.]
