LJ Idol Week 19, Mirage

It’s been a while since I asked a parking meter for directions or tried to carry on a conversation with a lamp post, mistaking them for people. Yet these things happen to me on what seems to be a regular basis. Everything I see is an illusion. It is, all of it, there but also not there. A pair of boots on the floor looks like my cat and I might ( Read more... )

This does have to be frustrating sometimes, I'd imagine. But it sounds like you have a healthy sense of humor which is a good thing. But yeah, sight is one of those things most of us take for granted... to be caught in the middle, between seeing and not-seeing... that would be frustrating.

I think a good sense of humor is key in getting through life.

Sighted people definitely take vision for granted and all the opportunity it offers. I take my hearing for granted though, and other things like being able to walk, although I try to express gratitude for these things on a daily basis.

I know it can't compare, but I have terrible vision without my glasses on so I could relate a bit to thinking things were what they were not. Like seeing a plastic bag and thinking it's the cat, not recognising a person who's only a few meters away.

At first, I thought you were writing a fictional piece based on The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat! In that (non-fiction) book, one of the case studies (the titular case study) is about a man has a cognitive disorder that leads him to literally see things as other things.

I had never thought about how having a small amount of vision could lead one to mistake objects in a similar way, but that makes perfect sense to me after reading your entry. I am glad for you that you seem to have a sense of humor about it, because I think I would be constantly frustrated!

I have heard of that book.

I'm just used to it. I try to have a sense of humor about most things. That way life is a little easier to swallow if you know what I mean.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

The fact that it's exhausting is why I don't often rely on my vision for things.
