*points* YOU!

...I luff you. <3

Ahem. Anyway, this was a really fascinating read. Spock/Uhura does come off really poorly thought out, huh? I cringe everytime I see one of their scenes--way too awkward. But your analysis that Spock/Uhura not only is made of suck, but also affects the development of other characters? Wow, did not think of that, especially the McCoy part. I did get the part where they kind of kill TOS!Uhura, but I didn't realize exactly how until you put it to text ( ... )

(Thank you for the awesome comment!)

But yeah. It wasn't until I actually started writing this that I realized just how sexualized Uhura is in Reboot. That's one of the things that bothers me the most, when female characters in films are unnecessarily sexualized.

Good god, this was actually very good and everything I couldn't articulate myself. Your first paragraph is exactly how I feel. I don't like Spock/Uhura, I like Uhura, and it's not because I'm a jealous bitch of a Spork shipper. Instead, it's entirely the movie's fault. I don't feel threatened by good het relationships. Your breakdown of how Uhura is overshadowed by the men? YES, a million times YES.

^.^ That's exactly what I was trying to get across, that I disagree with Spock/Uhura because of what it does to their characters, not how it interferes with K/S [hell, Spock and Uhura could get bonded (pleasenopleasenopleaseno), and K/S would still find a way around it].

I LOVED this!

I LOATHE Spock/Uhura and in the turbolift after Vulcan was destroyed her chasing after him and kissing him while he was vulnerable was disgusting.

I love TOS Uhura but 2009 Uhura kept chasing after Spock instead of staying at her post. It was clear they had no chemistry.

They turned Uhura into a snob and a sex object.

There are times I want to create an anti Spock/Uhura group.

The movie should've featured Kirk, Spock and McCoy as the trio we loved.

Huh, I never thought of how many times Uhura left her post to go after Spock. TOS!Uhura would never do that (at least, she would stray so far from it if she did get up for whatever reason). In nu!Uhura's defense, maybe she's just too inexperienced to think to get someone to replace her? IDK, but thank you for the comment!

This entire comment is a thing of beauty.

I kind of like, want to hang it up and show it to people when they don't believe me about people on the internet.

Uhura kept chasing after Spock instead of staying at her post.

Oh man, you're right! It's kind of weird though, sometimes I think "wait a second, if she kept leaving her post by following Spock around, doesn't that mean Spock was ALSO leaving his post all the time, instead of staying in the captain's chair like he was supposed to?"

But then I realize I'm using icky non-Vulcan logic and flagellate myself with a cat-o-nine-tails and feel much better.

Wow I feel the sarcasm.

You are obviously a total Spock/Uhura lover. Its been awhile since I saw the movie but your right that Spock left, but still he told her to call Vulcan and tell them to evacuate and she went after him instead. And when he and Jim were in the transporter room she didn't have to be there unless she'd been relieved by someone else.

You love them and can have your own opinion and I can have mine.

Hi. I completly agree, they destroyed Uhura's charcter. She was my favorite TOS woman, but now she's really nothing more then eye candy. I also don't like what they did to McCoy. Now the "traid" isn't going to be K/S/Mc, it'll be K/S/U. I love those points about Uhura and sexuatily you pointed out. Makes me wornder if ANY women were involved in making XI. I'm glad that my post stuck with you and prompted you to write this. :)

How does giving Uhura a first name, a romance, and defining what her job actually is beyond relaying messages "ruining" her character?

I think this artcile speaks for itself, but i'll tell you anyway.

She is nothing remotally like TOS Uhura. Yes, I know it's reboot and she's young and inexperinced and everything, but there's not very much of her older self IN her, if that makes any sense. Also, as others have pointed out, in the show she was a woman who didn't need a romance to diefine her, both as a woman, or realting to her role on the show. In reboot however, her romance with Spock IS what defines her to viewers. She displays very little of her langauge skills, her compatance as a trained Starfleet Officer, and, to furthur top it off, her main role seems to be "the girlfriend". If Uhura wasn't involved with Spock, even if JJ introudced it in a sequal, she would still be seen as more then the romantic girl, she would be more fleashed out as a charcter, so more people would see the woman she was meant to be. But, as it is, she's not.

You are right. She is nothing like TOS Uhura. She is what TOS was supposed to be but couldn;t be because of racism and sexism ( ... )
