:S I don't think it's about being popular, or even the best of the best (not that the makers aren't amazing - but as was said last week, it's not our place to impose standards on their makers). I think it's about a bunch of makers who want to do activities together. Period. Hopefully one of them will answer this too, but that's my take on it.
Probably a magicmachine maker who's been around longer than I have would be able to answer this better, but imo the appeal (for the makers) is the comm-specific challenges and the fun social aspect of it. Cross-posting there is always an afterthought to me. idk, sometimes it's fun to make icon-making a less solitary activity?
The point of MagicMachine is to be a community full of makers that love fandom, are good at making icons & enjoy monthly activities, nothing more really. The reason there is so much around it seems to be that it was (I'm pretty sure) the first of it's kind and for that reason it gets a lot more attention I guess. It's the original that will always be compared to?
It was never created as 'elite' or to prove someone was good - we had only a few makers in the beginning, and then it grew, then more interest grew to be a member so applications were the road we took. A lot of amazing makers applied recently but we decided we only needed 5 more members, we take a lot of things into consideration in a new member: icconing ~skillz obviously but also activity level, different styles, fandoms, mediums that get shared etc. It's not like an icontest where it's Yes or No you are good, and I'm sorry if anyone ever feels that!
When I was looking through your latest iconpost I already wondered where all the Lady Gaga craziness went. I miss your icons of her, though I don't listen to her anymore. :D
While I support you in this, I think having iconsecrets is a why people can vent or express opinions that they have without having to fear being ostracized. I am the first one to hate on anonymity, I admit, but sometimes it has a place. I don't think there is a need for the straight meaness sometimes displayed but it's going to happen.
The fact is, everything isn't puppies & sunshine all the time - and you can't make it be so. Anon Secret's comms will always be car crashes that you just can't look away from. You have the option to participate to make it nicer (or not) or you can avert you eyes. I think if you're going to be a member of one of these sort of comms, you need to be open to all sides of all arguments, not just the good bits.
Also, you could ask for another love secrets week to break it up!
Oh god no, the love secrets week was horrible. There's plenty enough adoration and circlejerking in secrets and comments already, we don't need a whole post devoted to that crap.
