Um....what? I don't know who it was that said this, but saying that you're not as good as some of the people that got in to mm is not commenting on anyone's status but your own. Who knows, OP, maybe they're amazed that they get to work with some of the makers in their multimaker comm.
My advice is to just go for it! They may not have time, but I've asked some makers about how they do specific effects before and they've been willing to give me a couple of tips!
Aww, anon! I feel you on being shy, but I've learned that in the icon-world, people are generally helpful and friendly. It's better to ask, for sure! Even if they don't want to take the time to write up a full-fledged tutorial for their coloring, they may at least give you some helpful tips, like color-fill layers and blending modes, etc. Give it a shot!
Oh yes. The hardest part of iconing is combining these two forces. The need to express oneself the exact way you want, and the need to get recognition among peers, especially the ones you see as superiors.
Luck plays a big part in it because if your aesthethics are very close to whatever collective aesthethics there are at the community, there is not much contradiction and you're free to do anything you want and still know people will love it. It's easiest for those so popular that they don't need to follow trends cause they actually *set* them. But if you hate every current trend with passion and just wait for the moment when, say, wrong aspect ratios and 'just-cropped-and-resized' icons will be 'in', cause you honestly prefer those, then there's a huge contradiction and a high risk of ending up bitter towards the community because these two needs are not likely to meet, there has to be compromise and that makes nobody happy. :p
SORRY FOR THE RAMBLING, this just made me think, very insightful and wise secret!
TBH I feel like of the contrast was upped, a little vibrance on the first & perhaps a little light was added on the last two, these icons would be kinda great?
Really? And you were supposed to be the most critical of 20inspiration mods o_O I don't know if I should thank you cause I was sorta going for ugly here though but that's still nice :D
I have such shoes to fill ha ha. Just looking at the Thor icon, it has great base colours, bringing out the cooler hues of the background and then darkening the blacks in his face would really make the crop pop. And with the alias one there are some great shadows on the left you could balance out with brightening the middle. Its all about mastering the basics first IMO! Then go nuts with everything else that makes you happy.
