A FedEx truck just showed up with an unexpected box: author copies of Ranking the First Ladies. So that one which showed up by itself isn't a fluke: the book really does exist!

Today's mail brought a wonderful surprise, completely unexpected: an advance copy of Ranking the First Ladies! Publication date is July 5th, but now I can hold my first hard cover book in my hot little hands!

Why, you may ask, have I not gotten any work done today? Let me tell you: it was the final negotiations, following by the signing, of contracts for TWO new books, to be companion volumes to my Presidential Book of Lists. Yesterday was BEA, the publishing industry's annual celebration of the book, which felt like it was aging a bit. Today was BookCon, related to BEA, but open to the public, and smaller. Many of the exhibitors at BEA did not stick around for the weekend, but there were quite a few exhibitors who came only for the weekend. So it was a smaller show, ( Read more... )

BEA (Book Expo America) seems to be shrinking year by year, as large publishers decide it's too expensive and not worth it, and those who do attend tend to scale down their booths.
