Back when I was taking composing lessons, my instructor mentioned going to publishing websites and checking on their standards to make sure the parts I was writing fit certain criteria. Basically, concert band songs have grade levels, generally 1-5, based on how difficult they are. Sometimes the difficulty comes with the key signature chosen; ( Read more... )

I just finished the update to the song. I could have finished it last night but hit a roadblock--the last two parts either had too much to change or too intricate of a change, so instead of using the two-page older parts, I cheated and used the tiny-print, one-page parts from last year. My plan for today was to print out the individual parts to my piece before my lesson, and if I had time, maybe play on one of the pianos or study French. As it turned out, there was no extra time, and I even stayed an hour after my lesson to finish. Sigh ( Read more... )

Yesterday was my last piano class. I got there early because I was too antsy to stay home. I'd practiced a lot over the weekend, save for Saturday, because I thought maybe the teacher would want me to go over some of the songs I'd already done but at a faster tempo. School is winding down. I have one more piano class and one more composing lesson. Strangely enough, I have three more French classes, but that's just because of how everything has been scheduled.
