Fifth Third Bank is based in Cincinnati, and they have a pretty strong presence here in Louisville. I remember reading several years ago that the name had its origins in a merger between a Fifth National Bank and a Third National Bank.

Yeah, something like that. And if you go to the Wikipedia article on Fifth Third, you might be amused to discover why they called it "Fifth Third" rather than "Third Fifth."
